My story as a Photographer
My story as a Photographer
This book is going to be one of the most fascinating pictorial books anyone has ever seen by an Independent photographer. The format of this volume is to be visually exciting and exceedingly informative. Not only are photographs the common currency of visual communication in the industrialized nation, but also it has become the paradigm democratic art form. Therefore, more people today than ever before use cameras torecord familiar events or express personal responses to real experiences.
I do not work for any major papers or magazine companies; I am totally a sole proprietor. I solely trust God (my Lord and savior) to speak and touch the hearts of people who can appreciate the quality of work and talent given to me. In 1987, as a black African male student attending the Art Institute of Atlanta, I dreamed that one day I could study photography with other well-known black photographers. However, I quickly learned that the competition was high and that each man was for himself. Nevertheless, my mission was to learn how to photograph, so that I could photograph Social events, high style Galas and etc. I continued to pray and studied for hours reading and looking at pictures in books trying to understand and analyze the details of what I thought was a perfect photograph. During this time, I vowed that I would always share with people (who would ask) the information on what I have learned in this journey. However, it is not going to be easy.
On a winter day in 1988, my sister and her husband was invited to a big Gala hosted by The Atlanta Bench and Bar Association. My sister and Mrs. Marilyn Roberts are great friends from high school. That she would ask on my behalf to the president of the organization to see if they would allow me the opportunity to photograph their event. It was the beginning of a wonderful career as a photographer. I had always dreamed of taking photographs of Atlanta’s finest (Mayor Maynard Jackson, Dr. Louise Sullivan and a host of notable people) but to actually do it was a dream come true and a night I would never forget.
This is how a bit of history in the making by a black African male photographer got started. I can only hope that your journey through my eyes as a photographer invoke an immediate response. This book is so well provided with visual images of notable people that the subject captured will create a lasting image of a fleeting moment frozen in time. One thing for sure is that the photographs will tell a story of simple history unfolded through photographs as the events took place. We hold in our hands a permanency of cherished moments . . . . images of today, yesterday, and the past.
After all, these cherished moments may seem frozen in time but will remain embedded within our minds for a lifetime!
Embedded Within Our Minds A Lifetime of Moments
God Bless!
Peace Love, Eric

It is a great honor to write the acknowledgments for my first book. This is far beyond anything I could have ever imagined and for this I Thank the Holy Spirit for enlightening my soul.
I am truly grateful to God and to a lot of people, who have meant so much to me, while I was going thru these three years of writing and arranging photos to meet the goals I set for my self. This has been a great change in my life to accomplish.
I would like to acknowledge my parents Martha and Thomas Dortch, who is gone to be with the Lord. Thanks Mom and Dad for giving me life. I really wish you were here!
I am very thankful for the many blessing and for all the people who have played a tremendous part in making this happen. This publication would not be possible if these people, my dear friends, was or would not have been in my life to endow me with the positive encouragements that kept me going.
I have to give special thanks to John Jones, Niki Hands co-workers from the post offices as special writers.
Horace Holmes, a photographer in Macon Ga., who right from the start of my career, has given me good inside tips on the business of photography, and showed me how to actually photograph the themes of my dream. Pam Pryor from Bellsouth (Former Regional Director) who has always been by my side answering all my questions and sharing the fun during our dinners out. Danielle Edwards, Keva Scott, Jackqlynn Anthony and Mrs. Gwen Darden who have coached me along since 1988 and gave me that open window of my career as a photographer. (The Atlanta Bench and Bar Association)
I also want to thanks Bill Hardman, Jon Manns, Leonardo McClarty, Kasim Reed, and Theresa Walker, Stan Watson, Congressman John Lewis, and last GA. Former President Jimmy and First Lady Rosalynn Carter for always signing my photos.
Lastly, to the many companies and Non-profit organizations that has used my services from time after time, one love.
Truly May God Bless us All!
A Short Story About My Photography
A Short Story About My Photography
My purpose as a independent photographer when I started was to photograph our “Fading History” makers of our time.
I went to school for photography, the art institute only to find out that no one was interested in the style of social documentation photography like I was, they all said, Eric there’s no money in that type of photography. Most students that come here are interested in fashion, models, and advertising shooting, not documentary, they want to make money with photography. There was no money in that type of photography?
Well, I found myself alone in the pilot of searching for social means here in Atlanta and you did not have to go far, people was hurting that live right down the street or next door but it was their but as kids we all where poor so it did not mean anything. So I just could not put myself in the shoes to sit and photograph someones depress moments of life as a series of photographs need to tell any story, so I then turn to the homeless and for a couple of years that got to me as well but this is all in telling the story I needed these type of photographs. So I put together a short summary of what I have seen in the streets. As my Homeless Project. When in school we were ask to purchase the book call, A World Of History by Naomi Rosenblum
Well this book has been my very guide in directing the steps I have taken in documenting our city.
Every generation of photographer can and must build upon where other left off in the past. So my idea of the New Vision in black experience in photography was to document straightforward images. Begin and observer of the community in which I live on what I see.
About Inspirational Moments
About Inspirational Moments
Now after 25 years of my “WOW” moments!
It is about my blesseth time in photography, to have photograph Atlanta and DeKalb’s hero”s world legends, first blacks, and great momentous events of our city, special awards ceremonies, to presidents to the homeless.
What you will find in this well celebrated pictorial book of history in our eyes.
It’s about Living Your Dream!
It all started in the army, not knowing that it spill over into my life after army, as a real professional photographer (show photo)
I’ve always loved observing the world around me. Photography has been my tool to discover and explore what I see in my world and now to share it with others, now after 25 years.
I am currently exploring thoughts about ways to show historic movements and momentous events.
A spiritual, visual journey, Habakkuk: 2_1-4 write the vision down...Hebrews: 12:_28
Eric sharing his dream, he shares his experiences in photography and his golf life 15 years the AM Tour and his postal life of 39 years.
My documentary photography images show there is more to documentary photography-than the recording of our social ills, suffering and poverty.
The story I tell is only for INFORMATION of who is behind some of Atlanta and DeKalb missing history or the photographer who has created his own history in the making of our city’s History makers of our time.
So, I was greatly interested in the “Fading Era” of Atlanta and DeKalb’s in the survival of “Our History Makers”
Every generation of photographers can and must build on where others left off. So, my idea of the New Vision in black experience in photography was to document straight forward images. Being and observer of the community in which I live oh what I see, for our “History Centers and archives centers for publications and further studies.
My true business of photography is capture a bit of reality I have seen “ Behind The Lens”
History Is Forever!
In the future our photographs will be regarded as “ Iconic” images.
