Introduction
Kenya is a place of remarkable beauty and contrasts. The general belief that civilization began in Africa is based on specific evidence. The remains of humans, dating back over 7 million years, were found in Kenya.
Additional evidence of early colonization was based on a nearly complete skeleton that was determined to be over 1.5 million years old. This finding is known as the “Turkana Boy”.
We have evidence that ancient tribes lived in the region, now known as Kenya, over a million years ago.
The Portuguese explorer, Vasco de Gama is believed to have been the first European to have reached Kenya in the 1400’s. This is supported by the presence of the Portuguese, as the primary European group, in that region in earliest recorded records.
In the mid 1600’s, the Dutch East India Company landed at what is now Capetown. It had been originally named Table Bay. Jan van Riebeeck was the first white man on record to arrive in Africa. He arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, and established the Dutch East India Company.
In the district of Umoja in Kenya, there is an all-female tribe. These are the “Sentinelese” who inhabit a small island of thick forests. They have no contact with the outside world, and will attack those who approach their small island named the North Sentinel.
The “Umoja Uaso” is another strictly female tribe located near Archer’s Post. They currently occupy Samburu territory. The tribe was founded in 1990 about 200 miles from Nairobi.
There is some speculation that in 2000 BC, the first settlers arrived in what is now Kenya. It was not until the First Century that Arab traders arrived and began trading in what is now Kenya.
Many believe the ancient city of “Cush” mentioned in the Bible refers to a city in Africa.
Africa is generally believed to have been the “Cradle of Civilization” for all humans.
“Homo sapiens” is generally believed, based on some speculation, to have originated in Eastern Africa nearly a million years ago. The specific site is believed, by many, to have been in Kenya’s Rift Valley.
The anthropological designation for the earliest man has also been designated by others as the “australopithecine”.
In the mid 1600’s, the Dutch East India Company landed at what is now Cape Town. It had been originally named Table Bay. Jan van Riebeeck was the first white man recorded to have landed here. He arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, and established the Dutch East India Company.
Today there are over 40 district tribes in Kenya. Kenya’s two “primary” languages are Swahili and English.
Today, the largest of all African ethnic tribes is the Kikuyu. Their tribal group has a Bantu ethnicity. It originated in Kenya’s Central region. They constitute about 20 percent of Kenya’s population.
However, today the largest and most popular tribe, specifically within the country of Kenya, is the Maasai Tribe. The Samburu in Kenya are also related in in tribal history and traditions to the Kenya Maasai.
The San, also called the Bushmen, have inhabited the southern region of Africa for 30,000 years. Many believe they are the oldest tribe in Africa.
Primitive religion in Kenya does appear to indicate that God was considered to be a single being. His traditional name in African culture was “Ngai”, and he is recognized today by that name in most African tribes.
Today, Nairobi is the largest city in Kenya. Mombasa is next largest, followed by Kisumu and Nakuru.
National Parks of Kenya
There are twenty-eight National Park Reserves in Kenya. Some of the most famous include the Amboseli National Park, the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Nakuru National Park, and Aberdare National Park.
AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
The Amboseli National Park is on the border of Kenya near Mount Kilimanjaro, which towers on the horizon, and is almost always surrounded by clouds.
Nearby, hippos, antelope, elephants and rhinos roam openly on the spacious African plains. Another spectacular sight, near Kioko Lake, is the striking gathering of thousands of brilliant pink flamingos which gravitate to the lake shore.
Large elephant herds also make Amboseli National Park their home.
MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is possibly the most popular of Kenya’s many fine parks. It was opened in 1961. The park is located along Kenya’s southwestern border with Tanzania. It covers over 500 square miles.
This is the region of the yearly migration of wildebeest. At that time, large herds of the animals move in waves across the wide African plains.
This preserve in Maasai country has a great variety of animals including elephants, lions, zebra and cheetahs.
NAKURU NATIONAL PARK
The Nakuru National Park is located in the Rift Valley at an elevation of 1700 feet above sea level. Both black and white rhinos, two of the world’s most endangered species, live in this park. This is also a key location to view the thousands of brilliant pink flamingos which are often seen on the lake shore.
In recent years, over flooding of the land is currently occurring near Nakuru
National Park. This flooding has displaced hundreds from their homes. Climate change is resulting in new and higher water levels, which continue to be significant and concerning. This is not just a local problem. In 2021, there was also severe flooding caused by the overflow of Lake Victoria near Kisumu, Kenya.
ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK
Aberdare National Park is located near the equator. With ancient forests and steep canyons, it is a favorite tourist destination. Here there are black rhinos, leopards and elephants roaming the spacious park.
Also in this region of the Aberdare Mountains is the spectacular Thomson’s Falls. It is also known as Nyuhururu Falls. It is a picturesque waterfall in the Central Rift Valley of Kenya. It is located on the Ewaso Nyiro River. It is located a few miles from Lake Ol Bolossat, and about three hours from Nairobi.
This spectacular “must see” destination was named after European Joseph Thomson from Scotland who first reached this spot in 1883. It has almost year-round rainfall.
This forceful waterfall comes from the water source in the Aberdare Mountains. It is at a 7,740-foot elevation. The water falls 243 feet.
Tours to the falls operate out of Nairobi. Visitors can opt for an hour-long walk down to the falls.
The water originates in the Ewaro Ngiro River. Located nearby is a lake which receives water from the run off of the Aberdare Mountains.
Sunset in the Aberdare National Park, especially near the Falls, is unforgettable.
Lakes of Kenya
Kenya is home to 64 lakes. Some of them are alkaline, and others are freshwater. The following are four of Kenya’s most popular lakes:
LAKE CHALA
Lake Chala is on Kenya’s southern border with Tanzania. Once famous for crocodiles, it is one of Tanzania’s oldest lakes.
LAKE MAGADI
Lake Magadi and the town that shares its name is in Kenya’s Rift Valley. It is located in a volcanic area. Lake Magadi is two miles wide and extends 20 miles into southern Kenya.
LAKE NAIVASHA
Lake Naivasha lies northwest of Nairobi. At an altitude of over 6,000 feet, it is a freshwater lake covering about sixty square miles. The freshwater lake is a popular lake for boating. The lake is set amid lush forests. It is known for its hippo population, and also for its brilliant pink flamingos which populate the shores with their striking color.
This region is also known for its large population of the Kikuyu tribe who live here.
LAKE TURKANA
The largest lake in Kenya is Lake Turkana on Kenya’s border with Ethiopia. It is a freshwater lake covering 2,500 square miles. This freshwater lake is located at an elevation of 1180 feet. The lake is fed by the water from three rivers: the Omo, the Turkwel, and the Kerio Rivers.
Lake Turkana is the northernmost of the Kenyan lakes in the Rift Valley. Lake Turkana extends a length of 180 miles. Its northern shore crosses over into Ethiopia. It is the largest alkaline lake in the world.

HYRAX HILL
Hyrax Hill is a significant excavation site that was discovered by Louis Leaky in 1926. It was located near Nakuru, and significant pre-historic finds were uncovered at this remote place.
Louis and Mary Leakey had been examining two significant sites near the Nakuru burial grounds. In 1937, they began excavation on this area which had been settled in both the Early Iron Age and also the Late Iron Age.
The name “Hyrax Hill” is attributed to the small mammal known as a “hyrax” which inhabited this area in great numbers.
The site was originally discovered in the mid 1920’s, but Leakey did not initially realize its significance. In 1937, he returne
