It aims to show the visitor how good management and an understanding of the importance of hospitality underpins the success of each destination. Tourists are now very interested in knowing more about how the places they visit are organized and how they get things right.Including a detailed analysis of international best practice in destination management written with deep insight and research supported by extensive bibliography. This will be a major reference book on successful destination management based on Terry's 40 years working in the industry in over 55 countries.- This is not a typical language-driven, promotional bucket-list guidebook. ‘A lack of prejudice and an inextinguishable curiosity makes one an instinctive traveller.’

William Dampier (1651–1715), buccaneer, explorer and hydrographer born in East Coker who three times circumnavigated the globe and the first Englishman to explore and map Australia.

Wish You Were Here

Perhaps the best part of Wish You Were Here is that – unlike the obvious suggestion of its title – this is not a typical language-driven, promotional, bucket list guidebook. Terry Stevens gives these destinations real world context. He doesn’t just present a description of a destination – be it a city or a region.
He tells us its personality, its mood, and not just its reason for being, but also its resilience, perseverance and ultimate success. Stevens’ real wish here is for us to approach the world with a mission that goes beyond mere attraction or desire, but to understand these places and how they came to be, and perhaps in the process to understand our never-ending need to experience them.

50 Great Tourism Destinations

Wish You Were Here

French poet Victor Hugo once wrote, wisely and poignantly: ‘There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.’ How perfectly this statement applies to global travel and tourism!
Embedded within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, travel and tourism is now recognised and respected as an economic sector vital to sustainable, inclusive global development. With more than four million people crossing international boundaries every single day in 2019, travel and tourism currently accounts for over 10% of global gross domestic product and one in ten jobs worldwide. Uniquely, it has also become a means for shaping the future of nations, (re) strengthening national identity, competitiveness, and participation in the global community.
Importantly, the strength of the industry’s heartbeat comes from its ability to unlock cross- border, cross-cultural and cross-generational understanding – the human interactions created by tourism offering us all direct, invaluable sensitivity towards our shared world’s diversity
and differences in a way that inspires greater understanding, respect, and ultimately peace.
With this remarkable impact, destinations – cities, regions and nations – are working tirelessly to unfold welcome mats to travellers. Increased competition has meant that, sadly, the desire of destinations to quickly and aggressively stand out can, on occasion, result in strategically short-sighted product and/or promotion decision making that goes against the innate strengths and spirit of the destination. In so doing, tourism development can challenge the social, cultural and/ or environmental fabric of the destination, creating an underlying tension between visitors and locals. Duty of care has, as a result, become a part of the DNA of responsible tourism growth.
In Wish You Were Here , industry veteran Professor Terry Stevens applies his decades of experience and insight as a global tourism practitioner into putting a zoom lens on 50 leading destinations and their leaders. From Aarhus to Zadar, Wish You Were Here carefully analyses what it takes to successfully not just build, but rebuild through tourism, making it a rich, practical travel guide with a difference.

50 Great Tourism Destinations

Professor Terry Stevens is an international tourism consultant. A love of travel and interest in landscape was inspired by a teacher of geography at Yeovil Grammar School and fuelled by fellow East Coker ‘villagers’; William Dampier (1651–1715) explorer, hydrographer and buccaneer; and the great twentieth-century poet, T. S. Eliot.
Terry arrived in Swansea to study Geography at Swansea University in 1970. After gaining his MSc in Land Management at Reading University he returned to work at the Wales Tourist Board and has lived in Wales ever since, where he learnt to speak Welsh.
After leaving university he developed tourism on some private estates before working for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, West Glamorgan County Council and the Welsh Historic Monuments before being appointed Professor and Dean of Tourism in Swansea and Advisor to the European Centre for Cultural Tourism in Barcelona. In 1986 he established his multi-award winning, international tourism consultancy, Stevens &

Terry has over 350 published works including Landscape Wales (published by Graffeg), a pictorial celebration of the glorious natural treasures and landscapes of Wales. Featuring spectacular mountains, dramatic coastlines, gentle lowlands and idyllic river valleys in over 80 photographs.
Terry is originally from East Coker in Somerset and is married to Catrin. They, and their daughters, Mari and Non, with their families all live in south Wales. He’s a lifetime fan of Yeovil Town F.C. (The Glovers).
