Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The first instrument to which I will devote my energies is an ordinary warehouse 'cello. It was purchased from a well-known London firm by one of my pupils for the sum of six guineas - not a high price, but still sufficiently high to demand attention. The tone on the bass strings is something like that which would be produced by a matchbox, While the A string is shrill and squeaking.

A dj R V repairing and restoration of violins have been en irely neglected It is essential that a ma er or repairer should be able in some degree play the i strument he must also know somethi g of the technique of advanced p aying ack of his knowledge is answerable for much of the trashy work turned out by shops es ablish men s where knowledge of pianos organs and the sheet music trade is pre eminent and is also responsible for unplayable condi ion in which many of warehouse violins seem to be ome of my pupils and friends have said It is not that and do not know how to up an m nt ni ely it is because they do not care to trouble about adjus ing any instrument which is not bought at their establishment Be his as it may I will give some hints how convert a common warehouse ddle viol or cello into a playable instrument or a oneless broken resin covered l hy old specimen into a thing of beauty and a joy for ever
