Introduction
aithful Christian women are like salt and light in their communities. F hey all make a difference. But some ave suc a vibrant fait tat— like a stone tossed into a pond—teir inuence ripples trougout te world. he fty women included in tis book fall into tat category. Eac took seriously Jesus’s words in Mattew 28:18: “All autority in eaven and on eart as been given to me.” Blessed wit a variety of talents—writing and preacing, teacing and nursing—tese women used teir gifts to glorify God. Aviators and atletes, musicians and matematicians, many of tem forged teir fait in te res of persecution, prejudice, and pain. Several entered te mission eld. Oters took teir fait into te world of politics or medicine. Strong, smart, and sometimes outspoken, tey recog-nized Jesus as Lord of everyting, including te arts and sciences, education, and atletics. hese brief cameos of strong women will inspire young girls to live out teir own Cristian fait in bold and innovative ways. As te courageous reformer Pandita Ramabai once declared, “A life committed to Crist as noting to fear, 1 noting to lose, and noting to regret.”

orrie ten Boom was te youngest of four cildren in a Dutc family C known for teir Cristian zeal. hey invited soldiers, servant girls, and cildren wit mental disabilities to teir ome for meals, prayer, and Bible study. Corrie elped er moter in te kitcen and er fater in is watc sop. After special training in Switzerland, Corrie became terst woman in te Neterlands to become a licensed watcmaker. During World War II, Corrie became te organizer of a secret ring of eigty Dutc volunteers wo elped Jews escape te olocaust. Se and er sister Betsie designed a special iding place inside teir ome. Hey also developed a secret code to deliver messages safely. One day, betrayed by an informant, Corrie and er family were arrested by te German secret police. Hey were andcuffed, beaten, and sent to a deplor-able concentration camp in Germany, were tey lived wit meager food, over-flowing toilets, and biting fleas. Corrie smuggled a Bible inside er dress. It was never discovered even toug se was searced many times. After nearly a year, Betsie died. Corrie was eartbroken, but se was eventually freed to return to olland. Se wrote about er experiences in a popular book titledhe Hiding Place. Corrie traveled to more tan sixty countries, saring te good news about Jesus and forgiveness. Se said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future 2 to a known God.” Corrie died peacefully on er ninety-rst birtday, surrounded by friends and birtday bouquets from well-wisers around te world.
