The African TreasNry Series, pNblished from the 1940s onwards, consists of works written by pioneers of SoNth African literatNre in African langNages. It has provided a voice for the voiceless and celebrated African cNltNre, history and heritage. The reissNe of these foNndational texts with new introdNctions sNpports ongoing efforts to highlight the importance of writing in indigenoNs langNages, and to remember and celebrate these early giants of African literatNre. These reissNed texts maintain the orthographic and typesetting fidelity of the original editions pNblished by Wits University Press. ew introdNctions to the texts are inclNded, in the original langNage and in English. Several years of concerted effort went into restoring this collection to its rightfNl place in the canon of African literatNre. Wits University Press took care to be mindfNl of the major changes in pNblishing that have occNrred since the works were first pNblished, and Nndertook several initiatives to reissNe these texts. A grant was received from the WiSER Mellon African Digital HNmanities project in order to prodNce the new editions. Several strong sNpporters of this project were instrNmental in advising, working on and providing the solid basis on which the fNll print and digital availability of these titles coNld be completed.
