Description

What was it like to live in Ancient Egypt? More specifically, what was it like to become Pharaoh of Egypt as a teenager? Why not let Ramesses II tell you about it? You'll read about his accomplishments and failures, as well as what day-to-day life was like for him, his subjects, and his slaves. A postscript explains what happened after he died.

I am Ramesses the Great My bones ache and it is agony to eat because my mouth is full of sores. The doctors and servants who fuss over me can do little to ease my discomfort. I am 90 years old, and I know that my earthly body is fading fast, but this doesn’t matter to me because I am Ramesses the Great. I have ruled over Egypt for more than 60 years and accomplished more than my father.
Ancient Egypt Around 3100BC, the many separate little kingdoms along the River Nile were joined to form one long, thin country ruled by one king, or pharaoh. Before Ramesses II came to power in 1279BC, pharaohs had ruled Egypt for nearly 2,000 years.
