Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I met with Malik, a taxi driver, and went with him to visit his family. His mother was welcoming and kind, and his sister taught me to dance the Sammi. It was a warm and welcoming house.
#2
I was taken to a living room where I met Malik’s family. They were all very nice and welcoming, but I couldn’t understand a word they said. They kept looking at me and smiling.
#3
I was left alone in the room with the family. I was nervous, and felt uneasy. I was unsure what to do. I thought about going back to my father’s house, but I knew I couldn’t go back there.
#4
When I woke, the light was shining around the edges of the curtains. I could hear the women preparing food, through the archway in the kitchen. I was taken to the living room, where I was given a cup of tea that I didn’t like. Then Malik took me to his house.
#5
I was locked in a room with no food or drink, and I was terrified. I was a prisoner, and I had no idea when or if I would be released. I was too afraid to refuse when Malik asked me to massage his back.
#6
I was in cold shock after the ordeal. I was terrified of the damage he had caused me, and I feared every slightest new movement of the brush. With one sudden jerk, he tore the brush right out of me. I was in shock, and I couldn’t stop him.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
I was locked in a room with the bedcover wrapped around me, rocking painfully on the bare floorboards. I was terrified. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and I flinched. It was Surayya, the wife of Malik’s brother Eshrat, who brought me a mug of something.
#2
I was locked in the room with a barrel that served as a toilet.
