Insights from Chapter 1
#1
When you read, you should have a purpose. Purpose helps you stay focused on the material, and it helps you absorb it faster. When you read with a purpose, you begin to see the material everywhere.
#2
To help you focus on what you want to get out of a certain piece of information, ask yourself what you want to get out of it and why you are reading it. The clearer the purpose, the easier it will be for your mind to interpret the information and the faster you can sift through it.
#3
The 4 steps to creating a purpose for reading are: write down all the types of material you have read in the past, compile a list of all the reading you have planned in the next week, month, and year, and then cite the purpose for each item.
#4
Previewing the material you will be reading helps your mind make more accurate predictions about what is being read. It helps the mind understand the type of information that will be presented and how it will be organized.
#5
The mind makes predictions based on a series of clues. It reacts and responds to people based on those predictions rather than on reality. When our predictions are wrong, mistakes occur.
