Sample Book Insights:
#1 I was moved again, this time to a house with my sisters Camille, Gi, and Norm. We were wards of the state, and our mother had abandoned us. We were all very skinny because we were constantly hungry.
#2 I was the eldest of three girls, and we had survived a lot in our short lives. We had seen and experienced a lot, but we rarely cried. Until that day, when my sister couldn’t stop crying.
#3 My sisters and I were a single entity. We were a family, and we were all together. We loved each other, and we were happy. Then one day, our mother came home with a carton of milk and a box of macaroni and cheese. She was drunk and angry because she had just fought with her latest boyfriend. There were no hellos or kisses.
#4 When I was placed in foster care, I was terrified of my mother, who was extremely violent with me and my sisters. I was also terrified of the man who took me and my sisters to the car, as we had heard Cookie say she would get us back.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I was moved again, this time to a house with my sisters Camille, Gi, and Norm. We were wards of the state, and our mother had abandoned us. We were all very skinny because we were constantly hungry.

#2

I was the eldest of three girls, and we had survived a lot in our short lives. We had seen and experienced a lot, but we rarely cried. Until that day, when my sister couldn’t stop crying.

#3

My sisters and I were a single entity. We were a family, and we were all together. We loved each other, and we were happy. Then one day, our mother came home with a carton of milk and a box of macaroni and cheese. She was drunk and angry because she had just fought with her latest boyfriend. There were no hellos or kisses.

#4

When I was placed in foster care, I was terrified of my mother, who was extremely violent with me and my sisters. I was also terrified of the man who took me and my sisters to the car, as we had heard Cookie say she would get us back.

#5

I was taken to a house by my brother and sister, where we were to get our welfare checks. I was crying the whole time, and when we got there, I refused to get out of the car. My brother had to pull me out, and when we got to the house, I started crying again.

#6

I was introduced to my new foster mother, Mrs. Callahan, who did not like the fact that I was Norm’s size. She made us eat our meals in the kitchen, and we weren’t allowed to go into the living room.

#7

The rules were very simple: all foster things in the bunkroom at eight p. m. with lights out, the bunkroom door stays locked from eight until six the next morning, and if you have to go to the bathroom after eight, you use the bucket.

#8

I was paired with a boy named Charlie, who was nine years old, and a girl named Hannah, who was ten years old. They were brother and sister, just like me and Gi. Hannah had not spoken in a year, but Charlie liked to talk.

#9

We were at the dinner table with our foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Callahan, and their daughter, Becky. We couldn’t eat the liver, and we were told to go to our room. We were enraptured by the way Becky’s lips flopped loosely when she spoke, and the nooks of Mrs. Callahan’s teeth when she ate.

#10

I was sent to the bucket room for not eating all of my lunch. It was the worst thing I had ever done, and I was dreading it. I was with Norm and two other boys, and we all had to clean the bucket.

#11

The first week at the Callahans’ was difficult. We had to poop in a bucket, and one of our bunkmates was a night-pooper. We also found food hidden under our pillows each day, which we ate quickly before the floating eyes and ears caught us.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I was eventually allowed to eat with the family again, but I had to take part in kitchen duty. I was taunted by my foster parents whenever I dropped a glass, and I was punished with a beating with a wooden spoon.

#2

There are also nicknames that aren’t affectionate. I was called Raggedy Rosie because my clothes were so tattered and worn. I was afraid of the basement where Mr. Callahan took me to pick out some clothes.

#3

I often thought about being a foster kid and an abused pet. We were cordoned off in rooms, sent to beds, and locked in at the owner’s convenience. We had a continuing growling hunger that had no correlation to whether we were fed or not.

#4

When Brian was brought to the bunkroom, he told us about the various tortures he’d received at the many homes he’d been in. The worst was the house where the foster mother was convinced that the reason Brian twitched was because the devil was inside him.
