Sample Book Insights:
#1 When I came to America, I was sick. I was dying from fear almost, like the baby bird I once picked up that died in my hand. I did not know what was wrong with me, but I thought the same mysterious force that killed the bird was attacking me.
#2 I was five years old when I was admitted to the hospital with chicken pox. I had never seen a dead body, or a sick person, and I was terrified. I did not understand the rules about removing contagious people from the tenements.
#3 I have always played a part. I was a smoldering sexy spitfire for so many years, and I had to be a different person for every role. I was Rita Moreno, the Hispanic heroine with all four gleaming prizes. But inside, who was I.

Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I was born in 1931 in Puerto Rico. I remember the Juncos village cottages that clustered, friendly as the people, in different shades of pastel colors. In every yard, spiky green plants were planted, maguey.

#2

I grew up in Puerto Rico, and as a child, I was constantly surrounded by beautiful women. I was absently fondling myself, and my awareness of being alive was near sexual. Every day, I awoke aquiver to a world of pleasures.

#3

I love having a baby brother. I enjoy playing with him and taking care of him. I love how much my parents love me and care for me.

#4

I enjoy playing games at the creek with my friends. We race two coquí at a time, and we find big pieces of wood and half bury them in the soft earth to hold them up. We put fine chicken wire over the top of the construction to keep our racers from escaping.

#5

I am a citizen of Puerto Rico, which is part of the commonwealth of the United States. I am part of America, but not quite. The big America is another island, and I regard it as mythical.

#6

The town of Maracaibo, Venezuela, is famous for its Sunday promenade. The families move in alternating clockwise and counterclockwise directions, as in a waltz. They nod in formal approval as they pass each other.

#7

I have a clear picture of my mother at a different ice-cream house, in New York. She had returned from New York, and was opening a large steamer trunk full of gifts. She was trying to make friends with me before our journey to New York.

#8

The town of Juncos was decorated and had many processions, songs, and prayers. It was the last Christmas the family would spend together in Juncos, and my mother knew it.
