Description

What would you do with three extra weeks each year? Travel? Relax? Spend more time with family and friends? Studies suggest that the average businessperson squanders some 150 hours, more than three workweeks, every year looking for things in his or her cluttered office or cubicle. Taking the time to organize is making time to enjoy the things you really love. In The Well-Ordered Office, the author of The Well-Ordered Home develops her step-by-step and amazingly easy program for clearing the clutter and making sense of the mess in your work space.

Where other books on office organization offer the same advice readers have heard a thousand times, this book cuts straight to the real, deeper reasons people become disorganized, an inclination to procrastination, a yen for perfectionism, a habit of being easily distracted. Drawing on her experience as an organizer and practicing psychologist, the author offers simple strategies for overcoming these issues once and for all. Readers will learn to organize information, make the most of electronic media, and handle interrupting phone calls, coworkers, and e-mails with confidence and grace. Readers who practice these simple techniques will instantly enjoy greater peace of mind as well as saving time, money, and aggravation.

Welcome to the WellOrdered Office
Americans are working more than ever. And sometimes we waste time on the job. Pro crastination, searching for lost items, background noise, and twolegged interruptions all decrease our productivity. The time that you spend at the office influences almost every aspect of your life—relationships, home, and health. Doesn’t it make sense to use this time as efficiently as possible? A couple of years ago, I read an article about office efficiency in an unlikely place—the journalScience.if you will, a group of scientists (pocket protectors Picture, optional). Is this a group you would expect to discuss, or even notice, officedecor? And yet, the design of the scientists’ labs actually influenced their productivity. Labs that worked well had flexibility, allowed for easy access to tools and equipment, and provided opportunities for congregating and “social interaction” (read: talking to each other). The layout and efficiency of the scientists’ labs was directly related to their professional success.
My Story Allow me to introduce myself. I am a health psychologist and work in a research lab at the University of New Hampshire. Much of my work revolves around helping people reduce the amount of stress in their lives, and stress in the workplace is a major issue. Workers at all levels strain under the yoke of too much to do in too little time. Down sizing has only compounded the problem. In my travels, I’ve been in a wide variety of offices. While in school I worked as a clerical temp for several hightech companies. I’ve worked in the business and service sec tor and in academics. I’m an administrator for two nonprofit organizations. I do regular consulting work. Through these experiences, I’ve had opportunities to observe a whole range of work situations. Some have been good; others needed some help. I’ve also dis covered that when workers are inefficient, it affects everyone around them.

In my previous book,The WellOrdered Home,I introduced four key principles to household organization. These principles are not only relevant to the workplace; many of them were actuallydevelopedthere. Each one can help you use your time well. The princi ples are listed below: +Start where you are. This first principle has to do with knowing who you are and how you like to work. It means working with, rather than against, your natural bent.
+Have what you need.In every work situation, there are tools that will make your job easier to do. Make sure that you have those tools and that they are where you need them. +Use active storage.Active storage ensures that the tools you use most often are at your fingertips. It can help you make the most of even a small work space. +Get rid of clutter. This final principle will encourage you to keep what you need and get rid of the excess. Every minute that you don’t have to spend pawing through your mounds of clutter can be used more efficiently elsewhere. Throughout this book, I will use the word “office” to refer to your work space, but I recognize that your work space may be a cubicle or desk in an open area. My sugges tions apply to any of these configurations. Similarly, in most of my advice, I am assuming that you work in a setting outside your home, but these suggestions should be relevant even if you primarily work at home. While you may not need to deal with some of the interpersonal issues (such as office gossip—one of the key advantages to working at home), you will most likely have to deal with some of the other problems described here, such as interruptions or conflicting priorities. Suggestions about how to physically set up your work space apply to any office. So come with me as we transform your work space and make you shine. Don’t you deserve it?
