S ilicon is classified as a metalloid and is the eighth most abundant element of our universe and the second most abundant in Earth’s crust, following oxygen. It has many uses including, but not limited to, making greases, lubricants, rubber materials, caulks and waterproofing materials. In its pure form, silicon is used with the manufacturing of semiconductor chips for electronics.

Characteristics and Properties of Silicon
I ts symbol is Si and it has an atomic num- ber of 14 and atomic weight of 28.085. At room temperature, it is a solid. It is the second element in column 14 of the pe- riodic table. Its atoms contain 14 protons and 14 electrons and has 4 valence elec- trons in its outer shell.
S ilicon is a solid under standard conditions. In its random (amorphous) form it appears to be a brown powder. When in a crystalline form, it appears as a silver-gray metallic looking material which is strong and brittle.
I t is known to be a semiconductor, which means it has electronic con- ductivity between a conductor and

insulator. With temperature, this con- ductivity increases. This makes is a valuable element for electronics.
