UNDERSTANDING CHILDREN & THEIR FAMILIES
Chapter 1
Development of Children

Children keep learning something or the other every moment from each and every activity taking place around them. They have a very keen observation and a very good memory which develops further day by day. They also learn a lot from their own experiences as well by way of touch, smell, observation or whenever they get hurt. Since children are innocent and do not know much, they have their own way of thinking and understanding things and situations. Being inexperienced, they may not even fear a danger. Many times, children keep on repeating words and sentences without any usefulness or any purpose. In such situations, alert parents remind and sometimes scold their children a number of times to discontinue it. Such acts are more prominent upto 5-6 years of their age.
A family is the first abode of children, since their birth. This is the first step from where they start their basic learnings. Children will inherit, develop good thinking and talents if they are provided with a good, suitable and positive environment for its growth. Since their birth children remain in constant touch of their mothers for most of the time. They are greatly influenced by her actions, behaviour and teachings. Children get the best of education whenever their mother pledges to support them. She tries to guide and teach them the best, develop their talents and enhance their competency to optimum levels.

Such children not only prove to be a blessing for the family but also become an asset for the society and the nation. For the all round development of children, their mother will always have to remain alert towards the fulfilment of their basic needs and wishes. A mother is responsible during her pregnancy, as well as afterwards also to provide her children a suitable, organised and comfortable living environment. A mother not only gives birth or rears her children, but also plays a significant role in shaping the course of their future. Truly speaking, she is the one and only prime educator and mentor of her children. After their mothers, children are most influenced by their father who is the next person in their close proximity. Other immediate family members like their brothers or sisters, aunty, uncle or grandparents also play an important role in their upbringing.
Formal education through school is the next step towards the development of children. This is the first time when children have to remain away from their parents for a few hours everyday after being in their constant custody since birth. Many children create a lot of tantrums in the beginning, while going to the school. Primary schools are especially decorated with colourful designs, funny animated pictures and certain cartoon characters to attract these tiny tots towards it. Besides all these, it is also important that the school premises and its surroundings are hygienic, always neat, clean and attractive . They should also have all the basic amenities so that children feel comfortable and can fully concentrate on their studies.
A common challenge often faced by parents is the selection of a suitable school for their children. There are two main concerns which need to be addressed by them. One is the overall development of children which includes their formal education and other activities in the school. And the other is the awakening and polishing of their children’s talents in a proper manner. All schools and their academic staff have numerous skills in unleashing the abilities of children and its development. Parents after sacrificing their own comforts and overcoming numerous problems, only wish that they get their children admitted in the school which suits them the most. They make enquiries from their near and dear ones, from parents of other children and also from people connected to the field of education in one way or the other.

Children observe and learn a lot of things in the school besides their formal education. There they learn important lessons of life as well as etiquettes and manners from their mistakes and experiences. They also get cautioned from the mistakes and experiences of others by the way of sharing among their friends and other students. Children also get impressed by the good deeds and achievements of their friends, teachers and other people in their close contact.
Activities undertaken and time spent in the school by children make up for most part of their day. Their physical and mental calibre gets tested when they have to follow the rules and regulations of the school and treat others in the most decent manner. They are also bound to fulfil other commitments and obligations with regard to their studies as well. Since all children are not equal, hence, their learnings, development and challenges are also different from each other. Many times, it results into lesser concentration in the class, poor performance and even failure in the exams. This is an indication to the parents as well as their teachers that the working system of their children is lacking somewhere. It could be due to proper attention or timely guidance. For this, the parents and teachers are required to allot enough time and energy to find out the actual cause of their worries and a suitable solutions for it. The Parents Teacher Meeting (PTM) which is usually held every month in the school is a very progressive step in this direction.

Children are very enthusiastic. They are always eager to know new things as well as the replies to all their queries. N ew thoughts are always cropping up in their minds. Parents and teachers should ensure to provide all the necessary articles and items requir
