Early settlements in the Limpopo ValleyQuestion 1:Read the following story and answer the questions that follow: My name is Aneni and I live with my family on the slopes of a big mountain in our village. Our village is called “Place of the Jackal” and is beautiful with lots of trees and wild animals. We have to be verycareful at night as leopards and jackal may enter our village and kill our cattle and other live stock. I have to help my mother every day, before I can go and play. Women in our village areresponsible for gathering and preparing food and for looking after the children. We gather berries and roots from plants and clean our home. My mother teaches us where to find food and tells us storiesabout the past, when there used to be only a few homesteads in the village. Some of the women also work in the mines where they help to find gold. My mother has a beautiful necklace made of gold and glass beads that one of the ladies in the homestead made for her. My dad has an important job in the village. He is one of the King’s advisors and he consults with other important men in the village during the day. Sometimes he can be seen at the stone-walled court, but children are not allowed there. My brother Tariro, is turning 13 this year and he is spending a lot of time in conversation with my dad, but I am not allowed near them. The other day a traveler and his party came to our village, they brought lots of silks andcotton cloths from the East. They said they have travelled with a dhow on the Indian Ocean for months. They were taken to one of the leaders and after a long meeting, they left with some ivory and gold. Our king lives in a palace on top of the mountain. I have never seen him and there are soldiers protecting the mountain to ensure that none of us go up there. He is the messenger to Mwari and cannot be disturbed by the commoners. While gathering fruits with the women the other day, I heard them talking about changes to the village and the way we live. The fields are very dry and we are battling to find freshberries. I did not understand everything they said, but they seemed worried that our time in this village was coming to an end...
