English Home Language Grade 7 Abbreviations An abbreviation is a shortened version of a word or phrase. Acronym– forming a word by using the initial letter/s of words, pronounced as one word Example: ADIDAS – All Day I Dream About Shoes Initialism– a group of letters, eachpronounced separately,used to shorten an expression or name Example: USA – United States of America Truncation/Shortening– using the first part of a word to shorten it Example: Dec.– December Clipping (shortening)– using any part of the word to shorten it – these truncations are treated as and pronounced as real words Example: fridge – refrigerator If the abbreviation contains the first and Contractions– shortening the word or title of a person last letter of the word, no period is necessary. Example: Dr – doctor Question 1:the following paragraph, then answer the questions that follow: Read TIP:For acronyms and initialisms look at the initial letters of the words.
