There are 9 different parts of speech namely: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, articles and conjunctions. Let’s see how much you already know about these parts of speech… List 3 examples of each of the parts of speech in the table below: Part of Speech Examples Nouns Pronouns Adjectives Verbs Adverbs Prepositions Articles Conjunctions Nouns Nouns are known as naming words and they refer to the things we can see (table), touch (book) and feel (happiness). There are 4 categories of nouns which we use: 1. Proper nouns: These nouns refer to the names of people, places, movies, books and other titles. They always begin with a capital letter. For example: New York, South Africa, Bradley, Justin, Fiona etc. 2. Common nouns: Refer to things which we find frequently (commonly). There is only one South Africa (Proper noun) but there are many countries (common noun) in the world. Your house has a window but if you were to go to your neighbours house they too would have a window – a window is therefore a common noun. Other common nouns include: chair, door, bicycle, glass, shoes and so on. 3. Collective nouns: This form of noun is used to name a group of common nouns. If you have many flowers, you can refer to them as a bouquet of flowers. If you need to mention many elephants you would refer to them as a herd of elephants. Swarm of bees, flight of stairs and gaggle of geese are also examples of collective nouns. 4. Abstract nouns: An abstract noun gives a name to the things we cannot really see, taste, smell, touch or hear. They are usually a quality or emotion. The man whose car was scratched wanted to see justice served. Justice is an abstract noun. Others could be: fear, love, courage, bravery and creativity.
