Full Stop, Exclamation, Question mark
Full stop/Period: At the end of a sentence, usually the end of statement. Also used at the end of abbreviations, for example Mrs. Exclamation mark: Use!to show strong emotion, for example surprise, fright, a command, anger, excitement. Question mark: Use?when a question is asked. Lookout for these words at the beginning of a sentence:May, Can, Will, Is, Was, Were, Are, Am, Why, What, How, When, Where, Does, Do, At what
Capital Letters
Beginning of a sentence and after a period/full stop:every sentence starts with a Capital letter.
Proper nouns:special namesof people, places, books, magazines, towns, countries, days of the week, months, films, planets, brands, company names, races, nationalities, religions, special occasions, street names etc.—always start with a Capital letter.
Proper adjectives: using a proper noun as an adjective, for exampleGreeksalad,Americanpie.
Relatives family names: when used without their proper name, for exampleWe visitedGrandmotherat the hotel,butWe visited grandmotherGwenat the hotel.Titles and abbreviations of titles:Professor Smith is our neighbour.OrProf. Smith is our neighbour.(Only use a full stop after the abbreviation, if the title and the abbreviation does not end on the same letter.)
Exception:Occupations are not capitalised:We went to doctorJameswhen I had a cold.
Remember: Book titles/film titles: all important words and the first word start with a Capital letter, for exampleThe Boy in the DressorThe Happy Cricket and the Giant Bugs
Direct speech: The first word in direct speech is capitalised, for exampleSusan said: “Thatis a beautifulpicture.”
