INTRODUCTION

Anthony Charles Lynton Blair was born in Edinburgh on 6 May, 1953. He was British Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007 and Leader of the Labour Party from 1994 to 2007.

After his landslide general election victory in 1997, Blair’s popularity was riding high. Under his leadership, the Labour party (referred to as ‘New Labour’ from a slogan of Blair’s used in his 1994 Labour Party conference speech: “New Labour, New Britain”) surpassed any other record, with three consecutive electoral victories. New Labour was portrayed as a young dynamic party with policies clearly different to the previous old Labour ones, notably the traditional idea of socialism.

The early years of Blair’s government saw many momentous changes as promised in the 1997 Labour Party Manifesto, including the introduction of the National Minimum Wage Act, and devolution which established the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly. Blair was also involved in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, an enormous political movement forward in the Northern Ireland peace process.

Arguably Blair’s most controversial legacy was his support of US President George W. Bush’s foreign policy, especially in the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre, which ultimately led to Britain’s involvement in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

On retiring as Prime Minister, Blair was appointed the official Envoy of the Quartet on the Middle East – a group made up of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia, designed to mediate the peace process in the Middle East.
