Preface
About This Book
In the United States, nearly 7.1 million children and youth ages 3–21 in the year 2018–19 received special education services for learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other disorders that affect language development, motor control, attention, and behavior. It is important to understand how students with learning disabilities can be helped. According to the 2019 Building a Grad Nation Data Brief , in 2017, the national graduation rate reached an all-time high of 84.6 percent, compared with just 67.1 percent of students with disabilities—a gap of more than 17.5 percentage points. Although most states saw improvements in their on-time graduation rate for students with disabilities, just 26 states saw increases of at least 1 percentage point. Moreover, 14 states saw their rates decline over the past year. Identifying and addressing problems as early as possible enables students to develop the skills and coping strategies needed to succeed in school and beyond.
Learning Disabilities Information for Teens, Third Edition describes the process of learning, the different kinds of learning disabilities, and their common signs, causes, and diagnostic procedures. It also discusses how other disabilities, disorders, and chronic conditions can affect learning. Information on academic issues, career options, and employment supports for young adults with learning disabilities is provided. Coping tips such as learning environments, assistive technology, and other adolescent issues along with facts about laws designed to protect the rights of people with learning disabilities are included. The book concludes with a directory of resources for further help and information.
