Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I met Kathie Lee Gifford in 2007, and she helped me change my life. She joined the fourth hour of Today, and what followed was an 11-year professional and personal relationship I treasure.
#2
Scars are a sign of healing, and they are the thing that cuts through the BS about what matters in life and who we want to share it with. Don’t you think it’s our scars that connect us.
#3
On the twentieth anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, I interviewed both survivors and people who had lost family members.
#4
I had to take a test that would determine if I would continue my education. I couldn’t have cared less. My friend Peggy Fox, who was also taking the test, followed me out. When we sat down at a picnic table by the duck pond, Peggy didn’t say a word. Her mere presence was enough to comfort a small piece of my broken heart.
#5
I have called my mom every day at 11:01 a. m. for the last eleven years. She has always sounded excited to hear from me, even though she has seen me on the show. Now that I have daughters of my own, I understand how my mom feels about me.
#6
I had never had anything go wrong in my life, until one night at Virginia Tech, when I lost the most important man in my life. I’ve begun to bring up my dad during our night night routine with Haley: G’night, Teta, g’night, Mommy and Daddy.
#7
I love laughing with someone and realizing halfway through how much you enjoy their existence. I won't say who, but someone made me laugh so hard I wet my pants.
#8
I first met Carson Daly at NBC, and I was only aware of him as the MTV music guy. But as I began working with him more, I saw a deeper side to him, especially in 2017, when he lost both parents within a span of five weeks.
#9
You only live once, but you live every day. You only die once. What I loved most about chef Leah Chase was that she hugged you like your mom would hug you. She did that to me and to everyone she fed at her beloved New Orleans restaurant, Dooky Chase.
#10
I was always thinking about my next question and what I needed for the story, rather than focusing on the answer that was unfolding right in front of me. It took me until I met Kathie Lee to realize that I should get rid of the show topic cards.
