Problem Solving

Tips to make Problem Solving EASY! Read the question carefully and highlight/underline theactual questionthat is asked, e.g.How many marbles do they have all together? Underline/highlight thekey words that refer to operations. Remember that any problemsolving question requires an operation or more than one operation. Determine what theseoperations should be by using the key words, e.g. more than, less than, double, half of,shared equally, added, subtracted, multiplied, divided, times,… Sometimes no key words are given, but you candetermine the operationby carefullyreading the question, e.g. If it costs R35 for one ball, how much will it cost if you bought5 balls? Multiply –R35×5=R175 Decide if this is aone-step problemor ifmore than one stepwill be required to solve theproblem. Example: Emma saves R145,00 a month and Jason saves R136,00 per month. How muchmoney will they save in 3 months? Two operations: Addition –R145 + R136 = R281Multiply –R281 × 3 = R843Formulate yourOpen Number Sentence- some problems may require more than one number sentence. Calculate the answers, working accurately and showing all your calculations! Always answer in a full sentence and make sure that you are answering the question asked!Remember that if you skip this step, or don’t answer exactly what has been asked, in exactly the same words, you will lose marks!
Example: Charlie buys a toasted sandwich for R15,50, a Coke for R8,50 and a packet of crisps for R6,30 at the school’s tuck shop, every day from Monday to Friday. How much money will he spend at the tuck shop in one week? 1. Underline the question that has to be answered:
