Comprehension: Tutankhamun
 Grade 5
Comprehension:Read the passage carefully, then answer the questions:The most famous treasure of all time was found when the tomb of the boy king, Tutankhamun was discovered, in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. It was discovered in November 1922, by the archaeologist Howard Carter and his team. It was the first tomb of an Egyptian pharaoh to be discovered that had lain undisturbed by robbers since the king was buried three thousand years ago. Later, when Howard Carter was asked by journalists what he could see when he first opened the tomb, he replied, “Wonderful things!” Among the items discovered were gold jewellery and precious stones and a magnificent solid-gold face-mask of Tutankhamun himself. There were also the  toys he had played with, including a painting set and toy soldiers. There was even a supply of neatly rolled socks and clean underwear for the pharaoh to wear in his afterlife. Although all of these treasures were definitely wonderful, many people believed they were also cursed. They believed that in removing the items from the tomb, the archaeological team had unleashed an ancient curse that was engraved above the door: “Death shall come on swift wings to him that touches the tomb of the pharaoh.” Extractfrom “The World’s Best Book”,Buster Books
