Sample Book Insights:
#1 The two men were disguised as goatherds, and they were sent to check out the airbase. They didn’t take into account the inate stubbornness of the animals, especially when they were hungry. The guard grew suspicious when the two men didn’t understand him.
#2 Lassen and his men were dropped off at the start of the operation by a British warship, and they took out some Schnellbombers, German planes used for anti-submarine and anti-ship patrols.
#3 The codewords were made up from the first few letters of the men’s name and rank. There were five raiders on the Kastelli mission: Georgios included. They planned to cut the perimeter wire, and then blow up the airbase.
#4 The plan was to attack the airbase and blow it up, but if any of them were spotted, they would blow it all up and get moving. They all knew the emergency rendezvous point: meat.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The two men were disguised as goatherds, and they were sent to check out the airbase. They didn’t take into account the inate stubbornness of the animals, especially when they were hungry. The guard grew suspicious when the two men didn’t understand him.

#2

Lassen and his men were dropped off at the start of the operation by a British warship, and they took out some Schnellbombers, German planes used for anti-submarine and anti-ship patrols.

#3

The codewords were made up from the first few letters of the men’s name and rank. There were five raiders on the Kastelli mission: Georgios included. They planned to cut the perimeter wire, and then blow up the airbase.

#4

The plan was to attack the airbase and blow it up, but if any of them were spotted, they would blow it all up and get moving. They all knew the emergency rendezvous point: meat.

#5

The four raiders reached the airbase at around five hundred yards out. They split up, with Lassen leading Jones towards the airstrip, dropping to a cat-crawl as they emerged from the cover of the vines.

#6

The raiders cut a hole in the fence, and then went to ground to wait for the sentry to pass by. Lassen stealthily made his way behind the sentry, and killed him with a chokehold and a knife thrust to the neck.

#7

Lassen and Jones were able to sneak inside the base, and after a long and difficult cut through the fence, they were able to get close to the planes. Lassen went right, to plant the charges on the second row of Stukas, while Jones went left to plant the charges on the first row.

#8

Lassen sprinted across the tarmac, his felt-soled boots passing silently over the unyielding surface. He climbed up the steel ladder set against the aircraft’s flank, and from there slid onto the wing. He inched ahead on his belly, the rucksack held before him.

#9

Lassen was a grenade man, and he loved using them. He was known for being a schnell (fast) person, and he never missed a chance to use that skill. He threw a grenade at the Kubelwagen, which was loaded with four soldiers.

#10

Lassen, the machine-gunner, opened fire on the Germans. As he did so, all hell broke out across Kastelli airfield.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The British ship was a small, clandestine British warship. She had been modified for the present mission with extreme care and attention to detail. She was capable of sailing across the Atlantic Ocean without breaking up, and she could carry out silent night operations under the noses of the enemy.

#2

The Maid Honor was a ship designed to be used for small-scale, guerrilla operations such as the one she was on. Each member of the crew had signed an agreement before departure stating that they would be disowned by the British government in the event of their death or capture.

#3

The crew of the Maid Honour was made up of extremely brave and seasoned sailors. They were heading to an island outpost to pick up fresh water and food, and they needed to do so without an escort.

#4

The crew of the Maid Honour was taught how to fight silently and efficiently. They were taught how to strangle a man silently, how to target vulnerable points like the kidney or spine, and how to wield a pistol fast and deadly from the hip.

#5

The crew of the Maid Honour had to disguise their ship and their mission, if they were to land in Madeira’s Funchal Harbour. They landed safely, and waited.

#6

The first vessels to appear on the water were the traditional bum-boats, crewed by locals and carrying fresh provisions to sell to the visiting seamen. The Maid Honor passed her first real test when she was forced to turn west to avoid coming into contact with the Germans and their French allies.

#7

The Maid Honour was six days out from Madeira when the lookout on the masthead fire-platform cried out the warning, Ships off the port bow! The two vessels were still too distant to be identified, but one was clearly a merchant ship, while the other had the unmistakable silhouette of a battle cruiser.

#1

The British Expeditionary Force had retreated from the French beaches in June 1940, and Churchill had issued an order to his Chiefs of Staff that the military should raise a raiding force to strike the enemy in hit-and-run attacks.
