Sample Book Insights:
#1 The popularity of Jesus among the people of Galilee was controversial, as it made it difficult for Him to preach the truth. Instead of exploiting His fame, He began to emphasize the very things that made His message so controversial.
#2 The process of choosing and calling the Twelve apostles happened in distinct stages. Christ chose them before they chose Him, and he invested most of his energies in them.
#3 The Twelve were chosen by Christ to be his apostles. They were sent out two by two, and Christ stayed with them to support them. They were constantly checking in with Christ, and after a couple of seasons of evangelistic labor, they returned to Christ and remained with Him for an extended time of teaching, ministry, and fellowship.
#4 The timing of this event is significant. Luke notes this with his opening phrase in Luke 6:12: Now it came to pass in those days, which refers to a period of time when the opposition to Jesus peaked. Jesus knew that His earthly ministry would have to be handed off to someone else, so He chose twelve apostles.

#1

The popularity of Jesus among the people of Galilee was controversial, as it made it difficult for Him to preach the truth. Instead of exploiting His fame, He began to emphasize the very things that made His message so controversial.

#2

The process of choosing and calling the Twelve apostles happened in distinct stages. Christ chose them before they chose Him, and he invested most of his energies in them.

#3

The Twelve were chosen by Christ to be his apostles. They were sent out two by two, and Christ stayed with them to support them. They were constantly checking in with Christ, and after a couple of seasons of evangelistic labor, they returned to Christ and remained with Him for an extended time of teaching, ministry, and fellowship.

#4

The timing of this event is significant. Luke notes this with his opening phrase in Luke 6:12: Now it came to pass in those days, which refers to a period of time when the opposition to Jesus peaked. Jesus knew that His earthly ministry would have to be handed off to someone else, so He chose twelve apostles.

#5

When Jesus chose the Twelve to be His official representatives, He did not choose a single rabbi. He chose instead men who were not theologically trained. The choosing of the twelve apostles was a judgment against institutionalized Judaism.

#6

The apostles were ordinary men who were chosen to lead the church because of their blameless lives and moral integrity. They were not selected because of their extraordinary abilities or spiritual superiority, but because of their ordinariness.

#7

The Twelve were chosen from the unworthy and the unqualified. They were not chosen because they were different from us, but because God could use them. They were not inherently worthy, but they were used by God to accomplish great things.

#8

The apostles were chosen to be the first preachers of the new covenant. They were the foundation stones of the church, with Jesus as the chief cornerstone. Their influence is owed to the power of the message they preached.

#9

The Bible tells us that God chose the weak things of the world to put to shame the things that are mighty, and the base things of the world and the things that are despised He has chosen to bring to nothing the things that are, that no man might boast in front of God.

#10

The selection of the Twelve took place at a time when Jesus was facing the reality of His impending death. He had spent the entire night in prayer, and He had made himself of no reputation. He was now preparing the men who would be the chief spokesmen for the gospel after He was gone.

#11

After the night of prayer, Jesus returned to where His disciples were and summoned them. He was not only summoning the Twelve, but also many other disciples who followed Him from place to place.

#12

The dynamics of discipleship are similar to the dynamics of the crowd following Jesus. People are attracted to Jesus, then disillusioned when they find out His teachings are different from what they expected.

#13

The significance of the number twelve was immediately obvious to everyone who listened to Jesus' teachings. He constantly spoke of His coming kingdom, while Israel was expecting the Messiah to establish it soon.

#14

The title of apostle, which Jesus gave to the twelve men He chose, was significant.
