Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I was allowed to enter Iraq, and when the border guard saw that I was bringing supplies into the country, he gave me a permit. But my two Kuwaiti assistants were afraid that the Iraqi soldiers would target them as Arabs, so they stole their plates.

#2

I knew that being a neutral South African would not help me when it came to dealing with Iraqi gunmen. I was a visible Westerner, and as far as Saddam’s Baathist fanatics were concerned, any foreigner would do.

#3

I felt dread creep into my belly. The atmosphere in Iraq hung like a pall, and it had tempered the enthusiasm of my companions. As it had mine.

#4

After driving through the biblical landscape of Iraq, we finally reached the outer periphery of Baghdad. We asked for directions to the zoo, and an Iraqi pointed ahead. Al Zawra Park, he said. We were entering the belly of the beast.

#5

I was extremely nervous as I drove towards the barricade. I had expected the Americans to be friendly, but instead, I was met with silence and hostility.

#6

I was in Al Zawra Park, just a block or two from Saddam's palaces. The Americans were understandably on hair triggers. The area was extremely secure, and soldiers at the checkpoints were prepared to shoot to kill.

#7

The Baghdad Zoo was a famous landmark in Baghdad, Iraq, that had been completely destroyed by looters. However, the biggest damage was done by the soldiers themselves.

#8

I had been working on restoring Thula Thula, my Zululand game reserve home, to its natural glory. The elephants had been wandering deep in the bush for the past four years, and I had been working closely with them to ensure they settled down at Thula Thula.

#9

I had to do something to help the animals in Baghdad. I decided to go and see if I could help the animals in my reserve in Africa.

#10

I wanted to go to Iraq and see what was happening with the zoo, so I told CentCom that I had been assigned to take over the Baghdad Zoo. I asked for permission to enter Iraq, and the people in Doha referred me to the Humanitarian Operations Center in Kuwait.

#11

I eventually obtained a Kuwaiti visa, and went to visit the Baghdad Zoo. I met with Tim Carney, an American diplomat, who was in charge of industrial and mineral affairs in the Iraqi interim administration. I explained to him my concerns about the zoo, and he agreed that it was important to get into Baghdad as soon as possible.

#12

I had been trying to get into Iraq to save the animals from dying at the Baghdad Zoo, but I was unable to get permission. I met a Texan named Mike Honey, who could fly me into Baghdad on one of his helicopters.

#13

I was finally given authorization to go into Iraq, and I was accompanied by two zoo employees as guides and assistants. I hired a car at the airport and bought supplies. I wished I had a gun, even a pistol would be better than nothing, but getting a weapon in Kuwait was out of the question.
