#1

If you’ve picked up this book, it’s likely that you are stressed, overwhelmed, and worried about your child’s delays. You might be frustrated with a long wait for an evaluation or intervention services.

#2

The system for detecting and treating the earliest signs of autism and other developmental disorders is broken. It is far too long to wait to see the right professionals for evaluations.

#3

Developmental disorders are quite common. In fact, 1 in 6 children ages 3 to 17 have a diagnosis of one or more developmental disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, intellectual disability, learning disorders, and speech and language disorders.

#4

The situation is much more critical for children of color, as they are typically diagnosed and treated even later than white children.

#5

The strategies in this book work well for children age one through five, who are not conversational, and who struggle with problem behaviors or difficulties with sleeping, eating, and potty training. They also work well for typically developing infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

#6

The My Turn Autism Around approach can be used by anyone, with no experience or educational degree necessary. It is based on the science of applied behavior analysis and B. F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior, which has decades of research backing them up.

#7

The Turn Autism Around approach is completely child-friendly and positive, and it focuses on the whole child and the family to boost their quality of life. It does not recommend punishment or letting children cry it out, but instead uses everything it has learned about ABA and behavioral psychologist B. F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior to help parents control their children’s behavior.

#8

The methods in this book have helped thousands of children, from infants to teenagers, speak and interact with others. They have also helped parents understand what their children are experiencing, and helped them get the help they need.

#9

My son, Lucas, had symptoms similar to Chino’s at 20 months, but his trajectory was completely different. He was diagnosed with autism the day before his third birthday.

#10

I began to treat more and more children at younger ages, and saw hundreds of kids improve thanks to very early treatment. Some of them were just like Lucas when he first showed signs of autism at 21 months.

#11

The results will be some shade of gray rather than black or white. So I can’t promise that a diagnosis of autism can be prevented or that your child’s speech delay will be reversed.

#12

The strategies in this book should work with any young child with any social communication delays, sensory processing issues, severe tantrums, or those having difficulties sleeping, eating, potty training, or going into the community.

#13

The risk of having a sibling with autism is 16 to 36 percent. Siblings of children with autism are more likely to have developmental delays, even if those delays do not meet the autism diagnosis threshold.

#14

If your child has problem behaviors, a speech delay, sleep problems, or anything that concerns you, start helping him now. Let’s replace fear with hope and the status quo with progress.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

When your child seems to be falling behind his peers, it’s natural to become confused. There is a range of normal, and many factors can cause a child to become delayed in one or more areas.

#2

The Turn Autism Around approach has shown to be effective in treating children with autism. It helps them speak and interact with others, and can even help them fail the screening test for autism.

#3

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder with symptoms appearing by age three or before, and it typically affects children. Now, with the new DSM, everyone with these disorders is given the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
