The 13th century was a century of saints and of great note for the Church. It was marked by the establishment of the great orders of St. Dominic and St. Francis, and by the death of St. Louis, a victim to his love of Jesus crucified.

Gertrude was a beloved saint in a community of saints. The Saint’s patience in sickness and trial was unbreakable. She had a special gift of prophecy or foreknowledge, and she used it to give advice with promptness. She believed that God would be glorified by her gifts, and that they would be multiplied a hundredfold.

The troubles of the times did not affect the monastery of Rodersdorf. The Saint was elected Abbess in 1294, and she continued to guide her spiritual children for forty years. She was distinguished for charity and zeal.

The life of the young Abbess was not to be dedicated exclusively to active service. She was taught that exterior zeal should have its limits, however holy the end for which it labored. She was also taught that contemplation was not only necessary for the individual soul, but also to promote the glory of God in others.

The union of the Saint with her Lord became so intimate that she even feared death no longer. She had a sweet and holy attachment to the things she used for holy purposes, and she loved them because her writings were the work for which Providence had given her to the Church.

The life of St. Gertrude was so perfect, and she was always ready to do whatever pleased her Beloved. She could not stand the imperfections of others, and she saw them as flaws that would sully her own heart.

The saint was told that her union with her spouse would become even more perfect, that she would receive the gifts of God with even greater abundance, and that she would obtain such a perfect union with him that she would only see what God wanted her to see with her eyes, hear what he wanted her to hear with her ears, and speak what he wanted her to speak with her lips.

Those who give themselves up to God receive His gifts without reserve. They do His will, and He accomplishes theirs. The will of the Bridegroom and the bride is one.

The Saint was also able to obtain the favor she asked for, despite the fact that the Will of God did not comply with her request. She was told that her prayers had not failed in their effect, and was given another spiritual favor in return.

Gertrude was frequently consulted on all matters, and she was often afraid that her words and advice would instead hinder than help those who sought her out. But she was consoled by the promise of God that he would never allow anyone unworthy of receiving his body and blood to ask her advice on such matters.

The Saint was amazed at how great promises could be made to her, and she asked God how He could bestow His graces on such a vile creature. The Lord replied, The Universal Church allows that I formerly said to Peter alone, ‘Whatever you shall loose on earth, it shall be loosed in heaven.

When St. Mechtilde was given the task of writing down her visions, she was extremely humbled. But her Spouse reassured her that all of this was done to spread devotion to His love.

God often inspired his saints to do things that would cause scandal among the public, though not with the intention of giving them scandal. We should never abstain from doing good work in order to maintain a false peace with those who would scandalize the public.

St. Gertrude was asked by St. Mechtilde to obtain two graces from God: patience and mildness. She was told that the sweetness that filled her with a perfect tranquility came from the Lord dwelling in her peace.

St. Gertrude was a great Saint who was able to receive communications from Jesus in a audible voice early in her life, but as she grew in her faith and devotion, these communications changed. She would only receive inspirations in spirit, and she would use these inspirations to help others.

The Saint was elected Abbess on May 3, 1294, and governed her monastery for forty years, six months, and fourteen days. She was a great mother to the children whom God gave her, and she nourished them with the fruit of the most excellent virtues.

The Saint was now dying, and the religious prayed with great fervor for her. Our Lord responded to them: I have waited with inexpressible joy for this moment, that I might lead My elect into solitude and speak to her heart.

The religious who had received so many revelations for the Saint prayed for her, and Our Lord replied, A good king never takes it ill of his queen if she neglects bringing forward at a given hour the ornaments he is most pleased at receiving.

The Saint, as her health continued to deteriorate, became more and more unequal to the duties of her office. She was anxious to resign, but she was afraid that her own inclination might deceive her and she would prematurely resign. She requested her daughter to ask the advice of the Source of all wisdom.

The Saint was troubled because she could not approach Holy Communion as frequently as she had been accustomed to do, and she feared to approach it without her usual preparation, which her sickness rendered impossible. The Lord answered her prayers by telling her that he would reward all the good that was done for her not only in action, but by words of affection.

St. Gertrude was a nun who lost the use of speech in her final months. She was devoted to the Office of Compline, and her life-long devotion was demonstrated in her last illness. She was unable to speak, but she could still listen with the utmost attention when someone spoke of God.

The Saint lost the use of speech a month after the Saint had lost the use of her body. She appeared so ill that it was considered necessary to administer the last anointing without delay. As the religious were preparing for the holy rite, Our Lord appeared to her under the form of a Spouse of exceeding beauty, and extended His arms to her.

The Holy Virgin Mary was favored with a similar request from her Son. She was asked to grant her chosen one the same favor that she had received, which was the secure asylum of her arms.

The moment of release came at last, and Gertrude passed to the eternal embraces of her Spouse. The religious, whose revelations seemed scarcely less miraculous than those of her saintly superior, heard Our Lord address her thus: Behold, now, you are to be united to Me and to become My own forever, by the sweet embrace which I will give to your soul.

After the death of St. Gertrude, the community was extremely sad. They were deprived of a saintly abbess, and they were cast into the darkness of a dark sadness. But they began to rejoice with her and ask her to console them.

The Servant of God, St. Madeleine, was once offered the Heart of Jesus, with all Its marvelous gifts and graces, for the repose of the soul she so loved. She turned to her Beloved and found in His Heart treasures of all virtues and of all good.

The same religious, when offering the Host, also offered for the deceased all the movements of filial affection that the Heart of Jesus Christ had for His holy Mother. The Son of God then said to the deceased’s soul, Approach, O daughter, that I may manifest to you the filial affection of My most loving Heart.

When the bell was rung at the elevation of the Host, the religious offered it to provide the deceased with what was missing in life. When the priest gave the Benediction at the end of Mass, the religious saw their blessed mother standing before the throne of the Most Holy Trinity, where she prayed that her daughters would receive consolation and support when they visited her tomb.

After the funeral, wonderful signs were seen in Heaven, and the walls and pavement of the monastery seemed to shake with joy. The Saint appeared with a group of virgins of exceptional beauty, holding a lily and other flowers in her right hand and conducting the religious of her community who had already reached eternal bliss.

The death of St. Gertrude added much to the affliction of the religious, for her innocence and purity of heart had made her singularly beloved. As the favored religious wept and prayed for her, she wondered why the sister had appeared in great fear and alarm during her agony.

A religious died who had been devoted to the Mother of God since her childhood. She was especially devoted to the crucifix, and she always kissed the wounds of a crucifix when she saw them. She prayed that God would specially reward her for her humble and effective charity.

When the religi
