Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The medicine and power of birds can be found in every species, not just the predators. Every bird has a unique make-up that is designed for lightness. Their entire metabolism is accelerated to accommodate the lightness necessary for flight.

#2

The eating and digestive habits of birds are similar to those of humans. They have a rapid metabolism that allows them to burn food quickly, and they can develop a torpid state where they require less food.

#3

The bird’s neck has great symbolic significance. It is the point of connection between the head and the trunk of the body, the upper and lower. It is a bridge between the two. The neck can reflect flexibility in thoughts and perceptions.

#4

The flight patterns and behaviors of your bird totems should be studied. This will elicit much information about how vision is going to shift in your own life. All birds are weather sensitive, and can teach you how to recognize weather changes.

#5

The more you start to understand the characteristics of your totem, the more you will understand the language it is using to communicate with you. You will begin to see the obvious correspondences, and the subtle will become clear.

#6

The birds are a rich source of information. They communicate to anyone who will learn to listen appropriately. The body and mind knows and senses that what we see is significant.

#7

Listen to the birds, and note their activity. They will reflect the day ahead, and can be a wonderful barometer for the day ahead.

#8

The most common and effective way of attuning to nature was through imitation of it. Individuals would assume animal postures and movements, and incorporate them into sacred dances.

#9

The egg is a symbol of fertility and new birth. It has been used as a talisman against evil. The nesting habits of your totem can reflect the most effective means for you to construct your new home.

#10

The exercise is to connect with the power and majesty of birds. It can strengthen your connection to your own individual bird totem, and it can reveal to you which bird is your life totem.

#11

You are floating in a meadow, and as you breathe in, you feel the wind blowing across your face. You see a bird swooping down and carrying you toward the top of a mountain, and as you look down, you see the grass waving in response to the air currents.

#12

The element of air is about becoming more sensitive to atmospheres. You will learn to recognize which environments to avoid, which people may cause problems, and who and what may be of benefit. You will learn to change the currents of your life through a word, a sound, a thought, or a breath.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

Feathers are symbols of the accomplishment of rising from the terrestrial world, of being free of the gravity of the mundane world. They are symbols of balance and the wind. They are commonly used to symbolize all creator gods and goddesses.

#2

The feathers on a bird’s wings reflect a rhythm of two, which helps connect you to the feminine energies of creative imagination, birth, and intuition. They are excellent tools for developing or controlling the gift of empathy.

#3

The fourth type of feather is called a filoplume. They are usually found around the base of contour feathers, and they serve three primary purposes: they give great lifting surface without weight, they can be fluffed by the bird to trap air and insulate against the cold, and they provide a protective coat.

#4

There are four common types of wing structures: big, long broad wings that give maximum lift and great ability to soar and glide, small, swept-back wings that give great speed and the ability to maneuver, long narrow wings that reflect lots of energy to flap and also an easy ability to glide, and short, broad and arched wings that give great power with an ability for fast take-offs.

#5

The take-off and landing of a bird is difficult, and it requires outside help to get off the ground. The heavier and larger the bird, the more it needs outside help to get off the ground.

#6

The five steps to activating your bird totem are: choose a day on which the air is perfectly still, allow yourself to relax, breathe deeply, raise the feather above your head with both hands, and then lower it to just in front of your mouth. Slowly blow upon the feather.
Insights from Chapter 4

#1

Fetishes and sacred objects are used by many different cultures to help them connect with the spirit world. They are usually used as tools to help us connect with the more ethereal energies of life.

#2

When working with feathers, prayer sticks, and other fetishes and sacred objects, it is important to remember that the power and energy is not in the object itself. The object is a means by which we give form and focus to a particular expression of energy.

#3

When you find or are gifted with feathers, you should do some preening of them. This preening will help you get in touch with the essence and energy of the feathers. It will help distribute the natural oils from your hands to the feather, aligning you with it and its energies.

#4

To breathe life into your feathers, you must first do some background research on the feather and the bird it came from. You must be aware of the kinds of energies the feather is most likely connected to. Then, visualize the bird in flight and breathe out on the feather as you exhale on the bird.

#5

The feather exercise is a simple way to connect with the energy of the bird. As you hold the feather, try to imagine the energy surrounding the feather moving up your arms and into your body. It will make manifesting the energies of the bird in your life much easier.

#6

The healing technique of breathing on a feather and activating the energies of your bird totem is a powerful way to send specific healing energies into areas of the body. It is important to know the specific qualities of your feather and its bird for the healing to be most effective.

#7

The feathers can be used to clean the aura, and then placed on the body to heal and strengthen the unbalanced condition. The warmth of the breath, the visualization, and the feather work together to give form and focus to those healing energies most needed by the individual.
