Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The Order of Interbeing is named after the Vietnamese word tiếp hiện, which means to receive. We receive goodness, beauty, insight, and a sense of morality from our ancestors. We receive the wonderful Dharma, the teachings that lead to insight and awakening.
#2
The third meaning of Tiếp is to be in touch with life. We are in touch with the present moment when we are in touch with the wonders of life, but we are not in touch with the suffering that exists within us and around us.
#3
The second part of the Order’s name, Hiện 現, means the present moment. What we touch in the present moment is life itself. We touch the Pure Land or the Kingdom of God. We must see and be in touch with the suffering taking place in the world.
#4
The fourth meaning of hiện is to adapt to modern needs. This means that the Dharma that we practice and teach has to be appropriate for the intended audience, in accordance with the spirit of the Buddha’s teachings, and suitable for the times we are living in.
#5
Engaged Buddhism is Buddhism that is engaged in the world and does not stay within the confines of the monastery. It is present for the sake of the world, not for the sake of Buddhism.
#6
Buddhism in the world is referred to as Engaged Buddhism. When we give teachings on the meaning of the Three Jewels, we must demonstrate how to apply these teachings in our daily lives.
#7
We must be able to apply our teachings in our daily lives, not just speak about them. If we can do this, we have truly taken refuge in the Three Jewels and are therefore protected by them.
#8
The Order of Interbeing is a Buddhist order dedicated to the practice of the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings. They are not prohibitions, but practices that protect us from getting entangled in difficulties and confusion.
#9
The Buddha taught ten precepts relating to the mind: no craving, no anger, and no wrong view. There are four precepts relating to Right Speech: not lying, not causing division by saying one thing to one person and something else to another, not insulting, and not exaggerating.
