#1

The Five Precepts are the guidelines for an ethical life. They were revised in 1985 to reflect the way people were living at that time. But now, more than twenty-five years later, it is time to look at them again.

#2

The First Noble Truth is that there is ill-being in the world. The Second Noble Truth is the causes of our ill-being. When we look into ill-being deeply, we can see how it has developed. The Second Noble Truth illuminates the path that has led us to suffering.

#3

The Third Noble Truth is the end of ill-being, and it implies that there is a path that leads to well-being. Transformation and happiness are possible. We don’t have to stay stuck.

#4

The Fourth Noble Truth is the path to well-being, and it is found in the nature of ill-being. When we look into the nature of our suffering, we may begin to see not only the path that led to our suffering, but the path leading away from our suffering.

#5

The Noble Eightfold Path is made up of eight practices that lead to the transformation of suffering. Right View is the first practice, and it is the absence of all attachment to views. Right View is the insight of interbeing. Interbeing describes the awareness that all human beings and all phenomena are intricately connected to each other and interdependent.

#6

When we practice Right Mindfulness, we use our breathing to return to ourselves and unite body and mind. When we walk, we walk with awareness and not because something is pulling us along. When we say something, it’s because it’s what we truly want to say and not because our old habit energies are urging us to say it.

#7

The Five Mindfulness Trainings are a way to practice the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path in daily life. They are not commandments given by a god or authority figure, but ethical guidelines that reflect our own experience and insight.

#8

Some people choose to focus on just one mindfulness training, such as Right Speech. It is fine to pick just one training to focus on, since the one contains the all. When you practice Right Speech deeply and listen deeply to someone, you begin to understand their suffering and see how your happiness and theirs are not two separate things.

#9

I am committed to cultivating the insight of interbeing and compassion, and I am determined not to kill, let others kill, or support any act of killing in the world.
