This dictionary (Hausa-English and English-Hausa) by Professor Paul Newman
and Dr. Roxana Ma Newman is, without a doubt, a monumental piece of work.
It can arguably be presented today as the best bilingual dictionary on Hausa,
and the most comprehensive since Abraham’s and Bargery’s dictionaries. For
the record, the bilingual dictionary was initially published by Yale University
Press, USA, in two parts: an English–Hausa Dictionary by Roxana Ma Newman
in 1990, and a Hausa–English Dictionary by Paul Newman in 2007. Later, after
a number of considerations, and essentially in order to enable greater access to
the two dictionaries by the millions of Hausa speakers and scholars in Nigeria
and Africa in general, Newman and Newman came up with the idea of
publishing Nigerian editions of the two dictionaries, but as a single volume. Bayero
University Press gladly accepted Newman and Newman’s request to publish the
Nigerian edition.
Bayero University Press in carrying out its assignment was immediately
confronted by some challenges. It observed that given the passage of time, and the
fact that language is ever dynamic, Hausa and English not being exceptions,
there are now terms and expressions that needed to be included in the Dictionary
to make it competitively current. For example, some previously existing Hausa
and English words have recently acquired additional meanings through
semantic extension, while new words and expressions have been created through the
various word formation devices available to Hausa and English speakers. In
order to address these challenges, Bayero University Press assembled a team
of experts, all of them native speakers of Hausa and professors of language and
OLQJXLVWLFV WR GR WKH MRE $W WKH HQG RI WKHLU H[HUFLVH DOO LGHQWL¿HG QHZ ZRUGV
and additional meanings of existing words have been aptly captured.
What you have in your hands right now is, therefore, a product of Paul
Newman and Roxana Newman’s 30-year endeavour in lexicography and the
meticulous review of a team of experts, whose combined academic and intellectual
experience spans more than 150 years. Going through the pages of the Dictionary,

I personally feel honoured to present to you readers this great piece of work.
I also take pride in being part of the teams that worked on all editions of the
Dictionary – the earlier Yale University Press editions and the current Nigerian
edition.

Our introduction to Hausa lexicography began in the 1970s when we had the
good fortune to be welcomed in Nigeria at the Centre for the Study of Nigerian
Languages at Abdullahi Bayero College (now Bayero University Kano). A
major project of the Centre at the time was the preparation of the conciseModern
