Getting it right
Language is about communication. How we write and what we say are both part of this process. Two of the most important aspects of language use and communication are proper punctuation and accurate spelling. Whether your written work is a school essay, a note to a friend, a job application, or instructions for a science experiment, accuracy and attention to detail in your writing will help make your meaning clear.
Why are spelling and punctuation important? It’s not just a matter of making yourself understandable; you need to understand others as well. Reading information that is badly spelled or incorrectly punctuated can be annoying, confusing, or, in the case of technical writing, even dangerous. Here are some other reasons why getting writing right is important: • Correct use of standard spelling and punctuation makes written material easier to read. This is true, both in the sense of easily recognizing the words being used and understanding which words relate to each other. • Poor spelling and punctuation give the reader a bad impression of the writer. It can bring into question how much the writer cares about the material being written. This can really work against you when it comes to school work, CVs, and job applications. • When you make the effort to write something, even if it is just a casual email to a friend, you want the reader to concentrate on the content. If you use poor punctuation, then your reader will pay more attention to your lack of skills rather than the content of the message. • When you are writing something factual and informative, your reader might also wonder if your information is correct if your spelling and punctuation are not accurate.
QUICK TIP Glossary This book has a Glossary on pages 53–54. If you see a word you don’t understand, check the Glossary to see if the word is there. If it isn’t, try a good dictionary (see page 7).
