UNDERSTANDING TIME
UNDERSTANDING TIME
ANALOGUE TIME
Time = is a way of measuring how long it takes to do something, or to work out how long something lasts.
The day is split into two halves.
am “morning” . It runs from 12 midnight to 12 noon.
pm “afternoon and evening” . It runs from 12 noon to 12 midnight.
If you are asked to write down 7 o'clock in the morning, this will usually be written as 7am. If you are asked to write down 7 o'clock in the evening, this will be written as 7pm or 1900.
NOTE: there is an ’am’ and a ’pm’ for every time of the day, so make sure you know which one to use!
MEASURING TIME
We can break up time in a number of ways, but below we have shown you the most common ways time is broken up.
Try to learn as many of these as you can!
There are:
60 seconds in 1 minute
60 minutes in 1 hour
24 hours in a day
7 days in 1 week
52 weeks in 1 year
28 to 31 days in 1 month
6 months in 1/2 a year
12 months in 1 year
365 days in 1 year
UNDERSTANDING TIME
THE 24 HOUR CLOCK
It is important that you know how to use the 24 hour clock.
What time is it?
• The small hand is pointing at the 4, and the big hand is pointing at the 12.
• Therefore, it is 4 o'clock.
Now if it was 4 o'clock in the morning, you could write this as follows:
However, if it was 4 o'clock in the afternoon, you could write this as follows:
To change am/pm to the 24 hour clock, you need to ADD 12. For example, 2am (+ 12) = 14:00
UNDERSTANDING TIME
TIME AND ROMAN NUMERALS
Some clocks use Roman Numerals instead of numbers.
What time is it?
CALENDARS
It is also important that you learn how many days there are in a month!
‘30 days has September,
April, June and November .
All the rest have 31 ,
Excepting February alone .
Which only has but 28 days clear ,
And 29 in each leap year’ .
UNDERSTANDING TIME
TIME PROBLEMS
You might be asked to solve problems using time.
EXAMPLE 1
Jamie leaves his house at 7:35 am and gets home at 5:15 pm. How long is Jamie out of the house for?
How to work it out:
• DO NOT try to work it out in your head! Break it up into short sections. This will make it easier to understand, and you will be less likely to make a mistake.
EXAMPLE 2
Three people took part in a race. Ellie finished the race in 3 minutes and 22 seconds. Mia finished the race in 3 minutes and 45 seconds, and Rachel finished the race in 195 seconds. Who finished the race first?
If some of the times are in seconds, and some are in minutes, change them so that they are ALL in seconds, or ALL in minutes.
How to work it out:
• Rachel’s time is the only one in seconds, so let’s change this into minutes and seconds. Remember, there are 60 seconds in 1 minute. So, 195 seconds = 3 minutes (60 × 3 = 180) + 15 seconds.
• So Rachel’s time is 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
• This is in fact the quickest time, so Rachel finished the race first .
