INTRODUCTION TO THE KENT TEST
(THE KENT 11+ TEST)
Since September 2014, the Government have revised a new and challenging 11+ which students must take if they wish to attend a grammar school. The Kent Test is an adopted version of the previous 11+, whereby the test assesses pupil’s abilities in numerical and literary understandings. The 11+ Kent Test has been modified to ensure a fairer and more equal chance between students from all backgrounds and lifestyles.
The Kent Test is foremost, a test that is designed to assess whether grammar school is a suitable choice for pupils wishing to attend a grammar school and, more importantly, whether or not that choice is the right choice.
The Kent Test has two main elements, plus a written exercise: English and Maths test
o Section 1 – English
o Section 2 – Maths Reasoning
o Section 1 – Verbal Reasoning
o Section 2 – Non-Verbal Reasoning Written Exercise
The first paper – the Maths and English exam, will follow a similar format to the 11+ that was previously undertaken. However, the slight difference is that not only will students be assessed on their numerical skills (previously the third paper of the test), they will also be introduced to literacy elements, which were not previously assessed.
The second paper – the Reasoning tests will contain similar content to the previous 11+ test for which both elements of Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning will be assessed. GL Assessment, the exam board, refers to four key features of this test: Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial Awareness and Quantitative Reasoning.
The Written Exercise – is a short written test that will give students the opportunity to further their knowledge and apply their written skills. However, this test will not be marked! Page 8
THE KENT TEST
Improvements to the new Kent Test will help to determine the finer details of education assessments and understand the importance of performance, ability and skills needed to ensure students are suitable for grammar school placements.
These new improvements include: Students will no longer be expected to take separate practice papers. These practice papers will be incorporated into the Kent Test assessment. The test will include two main tests. The first test will assess student’s attainment of Maths and English, and the other test will assess student’s Reasoning abilities. These tests will all be in a multiple choice format. All students will be required to submit a written test. This test will not be marked, but will be available to head teacher panels that can assess the borderline cases following the request of primary schools. The new writing test will be shorter than the previous written test, which will allow students to complete the Kent Test in one sitting.
GLASSESSMENT
The test will continue to be written by the examination board of GL Assessment, and it will have a similar feel to the 11+. GL Assessment has provided the county’s 11+ (now the Kent Test) for many years.
They hope to implement some new changes in order to develop and enhance a more professional and sophisticated assessment process.
The Kent Test has the "potential for flexible development offered by the new process, which will give (education) a wide range of assessment information without requiring children to spend longer in exams" (Roger Gough, Cabinet Member for Education, 2014).
Primarily, the aims and objectives of the Kent Test are basic, yet effective. The Kent Test aims to: 8 Ensure students have an equal chance of passing the Kent Test. Provide a challenging new test that assesses student’s literacy, numeracy and reasoning skills. Assess how students perform to the challenges founded in these tests. To ensure students who are thinking of applying to grammar schools are rightly suitable and capable, and be able to demonstrate the expectations of grammar school requirements.
WHAT DOES THE KENT TEST INCLUDE?
The framework of the Kent Test focuses on three main abilities. These include numerical skills, literacy ability and verbal/non-verbal reasoning. There will also be a shorter writing task which is not marked, but can be assessed. The tests can be broken down more specifically as follows: English and Maths test
o Section 1 – English
o Section 2 – Maths Reasoning
o Section 1 – Verbal Reasoning
o Section 2 – Non-Verbal Reasoning Written Exercise
HOW IS THE KENT TEST SCORED?
Assessment scores will be based on the scores received in the English tests, the Maths tests and the Reasoning tests.
Although a Written test will have been conducted, this will not be marked. The panel assessing candidate’s tests may use this written test as a way of selecting students to indicate an overall performance or to filter borderline pupils.
To be given a grammar school assessment, students need to score a total of 320 out of a possible 420. No single score can be below the score mark of 106.
The score for the Kent Test will vary each year, so it is important to understand that you are unable to focus on a set score that needs to be met in order to gain a placement in a grammar school. The score is set each year depending on the performance of students and the range in which is scored. In other words, if the majority of students scored highly, the score pass mark would be set higher. If the majority of students scored low on the tests, the score pass mark would be set lower.
