Aphrodite is known in Greek Mythology as the goddess of love and beauty. She is part of the Twelve Olympian gods who reside on Mount Olympus. She is most-known as the most beautiful of the goddesses and even won a beauty contest.
How Was She Typically Pictured?
She usually would be depicted by the Greeks as a beautiful young woman, often seen with an apple, swan, dove, or scallop shell. Eros, who was the Greek god of love, would occasionally be seen attending to her in different works of art. She would ride a flying chariot pulled by sparrows.
APHRODITE
What Were Aphrodite’s Special Skills and Powers?
Similar to the other Greek Olympic gods, she was immortal and quite powerful, and those of desire and love. Aphrodite had a belt that contained power to make others fall in love with whoever was wearing it. From time to time, various Greek goddesses, including Hera, would borrow this belt. She also had the power to cause couples that were fighting to once again fall in love.
Aphrodite’s Birth
There are two different stories of Greek mythology telling of her birth. One indicates that Uranus, the Greek god of the sky, was her father, and that she appeared from the foam of the sea, floating atop a scallop shell to Cypress. Another story indicates that her parents were Zeus and the Titaness Dione. In the tale of the Trojan War, Dione helps with Aphrodite’s wounds.
