I n this book, we’re going to cover how to start collecting and identifying rocks. So, let’s get right to it!

Jagged rock.

ROCKS TELL THE
EARTH’S STORY

T he outside surface of the Earth is made of rock. The floor of the ocean trenches and the peak of the tallest mountain are all composed of rocks. Geologists, the scientists who study rocks, can tell a lot about earth’s history by looking at the layers of rock. The surface of the Earth is made up of mostly eight different elements, mixed together in varying combinations. Oxygen and silicon are the most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust.

W e think of rocks as solid and static, but the truth is that rocks are continuously changing. We just don’t see these changes because most of the time they happen slowly. Both wind and water on the surfaces of rocks wear them down and little pieces are carried away to new locations. Many of these tiny particles end up at the bottom of waterways and eventually they harden into rock once more.
