Willow Ptarmigan

Now you see him, now you don’t—this master of disguise,
In wintertime he looks just like a snowball with black eyes.

In summer he is tundra shadows, dappled dark and light,
Camouflaged from predators in shades of brown and white.

When Ptarmigan is molting, feathers shed then grow in new
To change his feathered wardrobe so he’ll match the season’s hue.

He’s comfy in the cold months with some artful adaptation,
Like fluffy down that grows in thick for super insulation,

And special sets of feathers that sprout out upon his feet
