Introducing the Czech Republic
What do you know about the Czech Republic? Is it the same as Czechoslovakia? You may have heard of its capital city, Prague, but do you know anything about the rest of the country? What do Czech people eat and how do they spend their free time? What does their country look like?
Small but spectacular The Czech Republic is a small country in central Europe. It covers an area of 78,867 square kilometres (30,450 miles), which is a similar size to Scotland. It is a country of beautiful cities with incredible architecture, a thriving café culture, and a vibrant arts scene. It has stunning countryside with large areas of forest, lakes, and rolling hills. The Czechs are proud of their artists, writers, and musicians, and the country produces some world-class sports stars.
New nation The country has only existed since 1993, when Czechoslovakia split into the two nations of the Slovak Republic (Slovakia) and the Czech Republic. Czechoslovakia itself had only existed for 74 years before that. But the history of the Czech people and land stretches back over hundreds of years and involves stories of power and repression. Read on to find out what makes the Czech Republic and its people so remarkable and unique.
