In memory of my sister Alma, who lovingly showed me that joy comes not just in the making, but in making stuff together, and who lived each day in the true belief that all is perfect — even when it doesn’t feel quite so. And to Kenny, who believed and wondered, too. –bn
To Mom, who showed me how; to Deb, who does it best; to Ramona and Arlo, who make it fun; and to Matt, who is always and ever. –ks
acknowledgments
F irst of all, this book would not have been possible without all the kids who came through our classes and workshops and the parents who entrusted us with the task of teaching their children how to use a power tool with a sharp, pointy needle. Thanks for the laughs. And the fodder, too.
Thanks to all the businesses, neighbors, and friends who repeatedly responded to our request for materials: Texas Coffee Traders, Bouldin Creek Neighbors, Jack and Adam’s Bicycles, John’s Upholstery. And to the endless and amazing thrift stores of Austin that provided us not only with materials but also with soul-satisfying field trips.
Thanks to Austin’s astounding craft community, who continuously gave us ideas, materials, props, and confirmation that the thrills of handmade are worth the time and effort. A special thanks to Rachel Hobson, who expanded our local craft community into the borderless virtual world and who connected us with Craftzine, which provided us with a virtual audience and a chance to do virtual summer camps when regular ones proved beyond our capacity.
Total appreciation and admiration go out to Katie O’Brien, who blessed us with her mastery of her photographer’s tools. Thank you for making our book look so gorgeous. To Shannon, our lovely and talented stylist, who made sure our kids’ outfits and fingernails were clean while simultaneously scouting out the best locations and layouts for our photo shoots. A big shout out to Dylan and Annie and Ella Jo, who generously let us take over their incredible East Austin compound and home for several days of photos. To Andrea, who crafted our lovely Future Craft silkscreen. And to the (unpaid) models who weren’t there because they were our children: Lily, Henry, Matilda, Thea, Ella Jo, Cassie Rae, and Vanessa. You are beautiful and patient, and we are grateful to you all.
To the spirited and determined Kate McKean of Morhaim Literary Agency, who sought us out for the creation of this book. Thanks for your straightforward dedication and for your vision and skill at moving this from idea to book.
To our miraculous editor, Roxane Cerda, who understood not only the thrills and challenges of crafting, and of crafting a book, but also the thrills and challenges of motherhood and life in general. Your hand-holding and guidance throughout the process was priceless and totally cherished. And to Charlotte Kughen, who gave a personal flair to the fine art of technical editing. You blew our minds with your skills and memory! Thank you Wiley workers for your amazing, wily ways.
Big, fat, wide-open heart gratitude to the girls of Goodness; you know who you are. Without your commitment to the soul’s journey and the encouragement to keep on keeping on and the belief that we could really do it even when we thought we were faking it, this book would not have come to fruition. Life is better with you.
Finally, to our families: Matt, Ramona, and Arlo Sever, and Kenny, Lucy, Otto, Esme, and Dean Noll Anderson. Thank you. Thank you for not calling us ridiculous. (Oh, wait; you might have done that once or twice.) Thank you for your patience and your belief that this was a good idea. Thank you for your ideas and your willingness to be our guinea pigs in the studio. Thank you for putting up with piles of random materials. And thank you, from the very big bottom of our hearts, for your love, which has been and always will be so crucial in anything we create.

foreword
A s long as I can remember, I have been making stuff. Growing up in the ’70s, most of the stuff consisted of macramé bracelets, papier-mâché piñatas, and sand candles at the beach on summer vacation. I was greatly influenced by family members making stuff around me. My mother sewed, my grandmother knit, my father caned chairs, my brothers drew and built and created stuff constantly. My fondest memories are those sitting around the kitchen table with my family crafting.
Today, all grown up with two boys of my own, I’m fortunate to carry on this family tradition. We live in such a busy time with so many distractions (much of them electronic), often rushing from one activity to the next. It’s more important to me than ever to spend time unplugged and in the moment with my kids.
Make Stuff Together offers fun and creative projects that foster building family bonds while making cool stuff! The authors, Bernadette and Kathie, share their invaluable experience and insights about sewing and crafting wit
