Description

Sammy knows what it means to be brave. He is an ordinary kid who loves playing with his friends and family, and would eat a bucket of jelly beans—if his mom would let him! But he is also extraordinary. He lives with complex health challenges.

Follow Sammy’s journey—a life full of joys and struggles, pain and comfort, love and hope. Along the way, meet Sammy’s family and friends, and the medical care givers in his world.

The Jellybean Kid is the sixth book in the Compassion Series, written for children and the grownups in their world to foster thoughtful, meaningful, and compassionate conversations in families, classrooms, and communities. The comfort guide will help you process the sensitive experiences unique to young people living with critical or chronic illnesses and other serious health issues. The guide also provides an insightful look at the experiences of family members, health workers, and others who lovingly care for them. Guided by profound, shared real-life insights, this tender book helps children and adults to better support families with a child experiencing chronic or critical illness, and nurtures understanding and compassion among those who have not journeyed the same road.

A Message from the Authors
From the start, we knew that this little book would be a great challenge to create. Not just a monumental challenge around offering words that would be equal parts truthful and tender, but a challenge for our hearts and the hearts of those who so graciously shared their experiences and insights with us.
Over time, words and terminology often take on new, and sometimes very different, meanings. During the seasons we crafted this project, we used the words and terms that resonated most with the many families and healthcare professionals that engaged with us. Even as so many things change—such as meanings and the use of these words—we hope and pray that over the years ahead, the gentle and loving spirit of our book will never be lost.
While the cover credits are ours (Tim and Margie), it is vital that we express five additional truths, with ever humble thanksgiving:
One. This book would have never come together as it has, or perhaps at all, without Annie Brandner’s priceless contributions. As a dear friend, a prolific thinker, writer, and editor, and an important member of the Compassion Series team, Annie freely shared her personal insights and professional skills in abundance.
Two. We would have never dared attempting this resource without the insight and counsel of the many gracious people who spoke goodness and grace into it. Parents, grandparents, siblings, nurses, doctors, educators, faith leaders, and, of course, individuals who were or are children with critical or chronic illnesses. Their trust and vulnerability have been profound, essential, and inspirational in countless ways.
Three. Larry and Marina Willard and Castle Quay Books have time and again taken on publishing and producing Compassion Series books that read outside of the traditional mainstream. These books are surely meant for everyone but might be considered niche among sales channels in the general marketplace. Their heart for words and thoughts that touch lives and help bind up the broken-hearted has been, and is, such a gift to the Compassion Series.
Four. The Compassion Series books are resources created by Youth Unlimited (YFC)’s Compassion Series program. What an honour it is to be part of the Youth Unlimited family. This book, like previous Compassion Series books, would most likely never have seen the light of day without the “home” in which we create them, which Youth Unlimited has provided.
Five. The long arcs of our unique and individual careers could never have been sustained without the profound love and support of beloved family and friends. How evident this was throughout recent seasons while crafting this special book. We are ever thankful.
Finally, this book, like all Compassion Series books, has been written with great sensitivity for all people of all faiths and beliefs. We have no agenda to impose, spiritual or otherwise. Still, it is vital that we are transparent with the source of our shared inspiration. We believe in a loving God that cherishes us all. One that hears our prayers and offers comfort and hope. We recognize that, especially in context to this delicate project, these words might be hard for some to fathom. We deeply respect that reality and have worked hard to create a resource that clearly identifies that. But, at the least, we want you to know that, as we have created this little book, it has been done prayerfully and with a heartbeat that we dearly hope reflects a loving heavenly Father.
May peace be upon you.
Warmly, humbly,
Tim Huff and Margie Timpson
