One spring day in a distant old forest there were three little rabbits who were very, very pleased with themselves.
Darcy was a young rabbit who was happy with his strength. With his powerful paws, he could dig holes almost anywhere, even in hard ground. For Darcy, digging was the most important skill a rabbit could have, because he would always have a place to hide from danger. That morning, he was really proud of himself because he had just completed digging his own burrow, and he was looking forward to telling his friends Farold and Howell what a great rabbit he was–the best–because no other rabbit could dig better than he could.
Farold was also a young rabbit, and he was happy with his speed. With his fast legs, he could outrun any other rabbit and almost all other animals too. For Farold, running was the most important skill a rabbit could have, because he would always be able to escape from danger. That morning, he was really proud of himself because he had just left a young deer far behind in a race, and he was looking forward to telling his friends Darcy and Howell what a great rabbit he was–the best–because no other rabbit could run faster than he could.
Howell was also a young rabbit, and he was happy with his sharp hearing. With his big ears he could hear every little sound in the forest better than anyone else. For Howell, hearing was the most important skill a rabbit could have, because he could hear danger in advance, and avoid it. That morning, he was so proud of himself because he had just learned to identify the sound of hawk wings far above, and he was looking forward to telling his friends Darcy and Farold what a great rabbit he was–the best–because no other rabbit could hear better than he could.
Each little rabbit was eager to meet his friends to impress them with his great skill. So, that afternoon, after school, they all ran to the forest creek, where they often played together.
