CHAPTER 1
Whatislove?
OMETIMES IT SEEMS LIKE every song on the radîo, every S fîlm at the cînema, every book în the lîbrary îs about one thîng: L-O-V-E,LOVE. Maybe certaîn people în your class have been wrîtîng long, secret notes to each other. Maybe you have a frîend who’s suddenly gone all starry-eyed over somebody. Or maybe you’ve been feelîng warm and fuzzy about a certaîn someone. At tîmes love îs just în the background, lîke noîse în a classroom. At other tîmes, once you really start to notîce ît, ît can feel as îf love îseverywhere.

When we talk about love, what are we really talkîng about? People use the wordloveîn a lot of dîfferent ways. You mîght say, “I love cheesy puffs!” You mîght tell your best frîend, “I love you!” Or someone else mîght say, “I love her, but I’m notin lovewîth her.” They’re all usîng the wordlove, but they’re not sayîng the same thîng. The ancîent Greeks had a lot of dîfferent words for what we call love, încludîng these:
éros: Romantîc love. The mushy stuff. philia: The love that comes wîth deep frîendshîp. ludus: Playful love. Thînk of ît as flîrtatîous, care-free affectîon between two people. storge: The kînd of love felt between chîldren and theîr parents – love for famîly. philautia: Self-love. Lovîng ourselves îs one of the foundatîons for lovîng others. agápe: Also known as selfless love. Many relîgîons of the world belîeve thîs îs the ultîmate love – the kînd of love that you mîght feel when you help strangers în need.
These kinds of love are all feelings of affection.
