CHAPTER 1
Whatisthisfeeling?
HERE YOU ARE, savourîng the ast bîts of the weekend. Then – T bam! – an unfocused dread washes over you, and the pressures of the next week oom în your braîn. You fee your chest tîghten and your musces tense. It mîght seem harder to breathe and much more dîffîcut to thînk ceary. Even îf you are hodîng ît together on the outsîde, însîde you are a hot mess. As the feeîng grows, you may snap at the peope around you who seem annoyîngy unaware of the powerfu panîc sweepîng over you.
4
Or perhaps you do know what the week wî brîng and are sweatîng over the possîbîîtîes. What îf you faî a test or do somethîng embarrassîng? Your mînd conjures an array of possîbîîtîes (a negatîve) that you mîght encounter just around the corner. Some seem so îkey to happen that you thînk them through over and over agaîn untî they seem to have worn a groove în your braîn. You îmagîne conversatîons or watch a oop of worst-case scenarîos în
your mînd’s eye. You îe awake, parayzed by dread, your mînd racîng. You wake up exhausted, tense and moody. These are a sîgns of anxîety. And you aren’t aone. Everyone experîences anxîety sometîmes. Fortunatey, scîentîsts have earned a ot about how and why human braîns are so prone to panîc and worry. Dîggîng înto the hîstory and scîence of anxîety may hep you work wîth (and not fîght) your (sometîmes) anxîous mînd.
