In this book, we’re going to talk about women’s independence during the Industrial Revolution. So, let’s get right to it!
The Industrial Revolution brought about major changes in Europe and the United States from around 1760 to 1840. The economy transformed from one that was based on agriculture to an urban economy that was dependent on the output of factories. One of the most radical shifts was the change in women’s roles.
Prior to the Industrial Revolution, women took care of the domestic tasks. They ran their households, raised the children, cooked, and cleaned. Sometimes they had cottage industries at their homes like tutoring or sewing. However, the advent of the Industrial Revolution meant new jobs were available in factories.
For the first time in history, many women took work positions and left their homes. Living on their own for the first time gave these women a new sense of independence. They realized that they had been “second class citizens” and began to fight for their rights. This change gradually led to the rise of the movement for women’s rights.
