I n this book, we’re going to talk about how coins are made. So, let’s get right to it!

C oins are created from metals and at the beginning they were made from precious metals such as gold or silver. However, as gold and silver continued to increase in expense, it wasn’t practical for coins to be made with these metals. Coins are now manufactured using combinations of other metals, such as zinc, as well as nickel and copper.

Small pile of Doubloons and Reales.

WHO DESIGNS
COINS?

W hen you look at coins more closely you’ll notice that they aren’t flat. They have a raised surface that’s called an engraving. In the United States, special artists create the beautiful designs for coins. They are employees of the U.S. Mint. The designs that the sculptor-engravers create must be approved by a special committee of citizens called the Citizens Coinage Committee.
