In this book, we’re going to talk about the Arctic tundra. So, let’s get right to it!

WHAT IS A BIOME?
Rainforests, deserts, grasslands, and tundra may all seem very different from each other, but they are all biomes. A biome is a community of animals and plants in a specific type of climate. Biomes are composed of similar ecosystems. Ecosystems are communities of organisms that live and interact with each other within certain types of physical environments.

WHAT IS THE ARCTIC TUNDRA?
The Arctic tundra was formed about 10,000 years ago, so it’s the youngest biome in the world. It is a harsh, cold, dry biome with ecosystems that are regions void of trees. Throughout the entire year, the climate is tremendously cold and very windy. There is very little rain. The lands are covered with snow for most of the year except for the summer season, which blossoms with fields of wildflowers.

Almost all regions of tundra are situated in the Northern Hemisphere at latitudes of 55 degrees to 70 degrees north. Most of the tundra on Earth surrounds the North Pole and covers about 1/5 of the Earth’s surface.
