“Momma, what is going on over there in the city?” came a kind, curious little voice in the early hours of the morning. “It’s not the beginning of the Sabbath, is it?”
“No, Ellie, the Sabbath doesn’t start until sun down,” responded an older, loving voice.
“Are they doing an offering then? There sure are a lot of people and soldiers for an offering.”
“Actually, from what I see, today an offering will take place—just not one our kind is used to. It appears that today a Man will be taking our place as a sacrifice.”
“What’s a sacrifice, Momma?”
“A sacrifice and an offering are the same today. It is something the people give to the Creator for their wrong behavior. It’s a way to say they are sorry and ask for forgiveness. Or they give something in order to say thank you for something the Creator has done for them.”
“How is that Man taking our place?”
“Our kind have played a role since the beginning of creation and the offerings of the people. We are, along with others, chosen for the special task to be what was given to the Creator.”
“But, Momma, this Man is not a lamb or an animal. Why is He being sacrificed?”
“This Man is so very special, Ellie. His being the sacrifice makes it far greater than any other that happened before this time or that ever will. You see, we were taken before the Creator and offered for just one person’s wrongdoings, which are called sin . This Man is allowing Himself to be sacrificed to the Creator because He is not just atoning for one person’s sin, but for all peoples’ sins who have lived, are living, and those not yet born to this world.”
“How do you know so much about that Man, Momma”?
“Stories of Him have been passed down through many generations to me by my momma, from her grammy and many great-grammy sheep before her. This comes all the way from a time when there was only one man and one woman in a large, beautiful garden called Eden .”
“I want to hear all there is about that Man, Momma. Since our kind are not the ones being offered, are we the reason He is being given to the Creator?”
“No—and yes. This world was created a very long time ago by one the people call God, or as I call Him, the Creator. The Creator goes by many names, but He is the same nonetheless. Even more, He is the Father of that Man the city is in a stir over.”
“The Creator is that Man’s Father? Then why are the people treating Him so unkindly, Momma?”
“Because a lot of the people do not know what they are doing. That Man is the Son of the Creator, and because the Creator loves everyone and everything so much, He is allowing His Son to be sacrificed to bring the people of this world closer to Him.”
“I don’t want this Man to die, Momma. It doesn’t seem fair for Him to die for us. Did He do anything bad to deserve this?”
“No, little one. In fact, it has actually been said that He is as, “a Lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:19 NKJV).
