To my husband, Eric , for his continuous support and love and for my daughter, Ana-Maria, for her inspiration and love.
Chapter 1
It is almost time. Anna Maria hardly can wait as excitement fills the air. Yes, in only five days the patronal fiesta ( grand party) of San Antonio will begin.
For hundreds of years the villagers of Zahcah have honored the feast day of their patron saint, San Antonio. In fact all peoples of Latin America celebrate feast days’ for their local saints. They do so for many reasons such as religion. For others local and personal pride also is important. And of course, everyone wants to have fun!
Anna Maria’s village of Zahcab is in the southeastern part of Yucatan. This Mexican state is home of on one the great Indian civilizations of North America, the Maya. After the Spanish arrived, most villages in Latin America have held a weeklong fiesta for their patron saint. However, for the past few years, because of the lack of money, the fiesta has lasted for only a long
weekend. The party is always a grand one with lots of eating, dancing and making rituals. This year the fiesta will be even more special because to bring in the new millennium (the year 2000), the village of Zahcab will once again hold a weeklong fiesta .
That’s why Anna Maria is so excited. A whole week of fun! And she can stay up late, too. Anna Maria is happy also because her grandfather is to be the host for this year’s patronal fiesta . Even at age eight, she knows what being a sponsor means. As president of the most important local gremio (men’s club) her grandfather has to serve his village as host for the fiesta . This includes opening his home for a grand dance, providing much food and drink and being in charge of all the activities. Why Grandfather Xul is even responsible for good weather. Imagine that!
