Description

Mrs. Rose's class is running relay races to help Ella Riley's little brother. What's So Mo Ella to do? She's determined. Failure's not an option.

Eight-year-old Ella Riley doesn’t like running in PE. The other kids call her Slo-Mo Ella. She’s always the last one to finish laps around the track.

But now, with the help of her teacher, Mrs. Rose, Ella’s class is putting together a relay race called Running for Rio—all designed to help her younger brother, Rio, who is five years old and who needs surgery to repair his heart. She’s grateful for the help and proud of her friends, but how can Slo-Mo Ella possibly join in running relay races? Ella’s determined not to quit. With a little bit of help and a lot of hard work and commitment, she’s going to do her best for her beloved little brother. Failure isn’t an option.

In this children’s story, a girl who struggles with running gets involved in a set of relay races to raise funds for her brother’s heart surgery and relies on her determination to succeed.

A Friendship Kissed by an Angel . . .
With heaviest of heart, I must inform that as a result of complications arising from heart surgery, my co-author, Carol A. Zaslow has recently passed away. We shared a wonderfully long and very special friendship. We were “Incubator Buddies,” both of us born prematurely with Carol, a twin, just weighing 14 oz. at birth!
It would be 40 years before we would again reconnect. Incredibly, the many, many similarities experienced by us separately, were nothing short of amazing. We believed it was our angel who made certain we’d one day reunite. And so it seemed perfectly natural we both had arrived at the same next chapter of our lives, writing children’s books. Our series, Little Kids Do BIG Things was created. With this cosmic connection, we were natural writing partners. We thought it would never end.
Remarkably and beautifully, the spirit of our story’s little heroine, Ella Riley, seems so in sync with Carol. She is a little girl who is kind, gentle and loving, and with a strong, very determined inner drive. Carol’s quiet strength powered her through life, as it did in those earliest, so fragile months spent in the neo-natal unit, fighting hard to survive. Both little Ella and beloved Carol were tenacious fighters. They understood, “The magic is believing in yourself.”
Dearest Carol—your voice will always be with me. ptt
It’s with tremendous pride and joy that I dedicate GOTTA HAVE HEART to my “Incubator Buddy,” Carol A. Zaslow. Most proceeds will benefit a charity created in her honor benefitting pediatric research to maximally impact youth/future adults. (support.cedars-sinai.edu/CarolZaslow)
Additionally, a small portion will benefit the charity she selected for our story, Girls On the Run. (www.girlsontherun.org)along
From Patti and Carol—
To those most blessed—our families . . .
Your unending love so brightens our hearts.
Forever we are grateful. GOTTA HAVE HEART wouldn’t have evolved without your insight and caring.
To Debra Mostow Zakarin—our dear editor who has no time but somehow always manages to squeeze us into her queue and edit so thoughtfully. We are endlessly appreciative.
To Michael Harris—a dearly beloved little boy, our inspiration
A small donation will be given to Mended Hearts (www.mendedhearts.org) an organization lovingly supporting the Harris Family and countless others touched by heart issues.
